The Eve Of The War
Featuring Richard Burton Lyrics

A huge mass of luminous gas erupted from Mars and sped towards Earth
Across two hundred million miles of void
Invisibly hurtling towards us
Came the first of the missiles that were to bring so much calamity to Earth
As I watched, there was another jet of gas
It was another missile, starting on its way
A flare, spurting out from Mars
Bright green, drawing a green mist behind it
A beautiful, but somehow disturbing sight
Ogilby, the astronomer, assured me we were in no danger
He was convinced there could be no living thing on that remote
Forbidding planet
The chances of anything coming from Mars
Are a million to one, he said (ah, ah)
The chances of anything coming from Mars
Are a million to one, but still, they come
Then came the night the first missile approached Earth
It was thought to be an ordinary falling star
But next day there was a huge crater in the middle of the common
And Ogilby came to examine what lay there
A cylinder, thirty yards across, glowing hot
With faint sounds of movement coming from within
Suddenly the top began moving: rotating, unscrewing
And Ogilby feared there was a man inside trying to escape
He rushed to the cylinder but the intense heat stopped him before
He could burn himself on the metal
The chances of anything coming from Mars
Are a million to one, he said (ah, ah)
The chances of anything coming from Mars
Are a million to one, but still, they come
The Eve of the War by Featuring Richard Burton is a spoken-word piece that describes an alien invasion from Mars. The lyrics describe how the singer witnesses the eruption of a mass of luminous gas from Mars heading towards Earth in the middle of the night. The gas was carrying missiles that were to bring calamity to Earth. The singer watches as the missiles hurtled invisibly towards Earth, leaving behind a bright green mist. The astronomer, Ogilby, who assured the singer that there was no danger, was proven wrong when the first missile arrived on Earth. Ogilby had previously claimed that the chances of anything coming from Mars were a million to one, but still, they come.
The story of The Eve of the War unfolds with vivid descriptions of the effects of the missile's arrival. The singer notes the sound of faint movement coming from a cylinder, which turned in a rotating, unscrewing motion. Ogilby rushed to examine what lay there but could not approach due to the intense heat. The lyrics imply that there might have been a man trying to escape from the cylinder, and this creates a sense of fear and tension. The overall tone of the song is ominous and menacing, suggesting that the people of Earth are powerless in the face of an unstoppable alien force.

I bet your mind was blown the first time you heard it? I'm 39 and I LOVE it, still have the original vinyl record, with all the artwork. I would have loved to take my mum to see the live show, she died last year, but I will take my daughter and pay homage

Even though I found out the truth about us living on a โplaneโ and not a spinning pear shape and ridiculous shit like NASA canโt go back to the moon because we destroyed the technology we once had in 1969.
โA planet is a much smaller fragment of a much larger planeโ you wonโt find that on google.
