Dobson co-wrote Miley Cyrus' single "Start All Over" and in 2010 she released her third studio album "Joy".
Dobson was discovered and signed by Jive Records in 2000. The record label wanted to give her a traditional pop star image. Dobson, however, wanted more guitar and to include some of her own written songs. Jive rejected the idea, so she left the record company. She found herself singing in a Toronto bar at 8:30 in the morning. It turned out a CEO at The Island Def Jam Music Group was in the bar that very morning. He wanted to sign her. They signed her up on the wrong lyrics. She sang her song "Stupid Little Love Song" and what the people thought she sang was "Stupid Little Buzz Saw" which they thought was "genius".
She met producer Jay Levine through Island Records and they began working on her music. “He just really let me be free. He found something in me that he really thought was special, it was just fate”. When in the recording studio, she hung up inspirational pictures of Kurt Cobain, Judy Garland, Coldplay, Jeff Buckley and the Vines, to help motivate her sound and to commemorate the artists who influenced her.
Dobson's self-titled debut album was released December 9, 2003 by Island Records and sold 307,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Four singles were released from the album; "Bye Bye Boyfriend," "Take Me Away", "Everything", and "Don't Let Me Fall". "Take Me Away" and "Everything" were used in the film The Perfect Score.
During much of 2004, Dobson promoted her debut album, appearing for a live performance on TRL and numerous magazine covers and articles. Dobson made an appearance on NBC's TV series American Dreams where she played the role of Tina Turner, covering the song "River Deep, Mountain High". She was also the opening act on Justin Timberlake's European tour. That July, she released a new single, "Don't Go (Girls and Boys)", which was also featured in a Tommy Hilfiger commercial starring the singer. The album was later reissued with that single added. Dobson also had a new song, "If You Walk Away", on the soundtrack of Raising Helen.
Dobson released "Truth Anthem" on the Much Dance 2005 CD compilation, a benefit for the Canadian branch of War Child. In April 2005, Dobson was nominated for two Juno Awards, Pop Album of the Year and New Artist of the Year; both categories were won by Avril Lavigne. In the summer of 2005, Dobson was in a public service ad "Make Poverty History", which brings awareness to child poverty worldwide.
I Made Out With Your Boyfriend

When this super hot thing came on up to me
He said, "I really think that you should come with me
There′s something, something that you have to see"
He said, "Don't worry,
I′ll just lock the door
Close your eyes and count to ten"
Oh oh, I just made out with your boyfriend
That's right, but we only did it one time
Oh oh, I didn't know he was your boyfriend
That′s right, and that′ll be the last time
I make out with your boyfriend
You can have him back
You can have him back, back, back
So the night after the party
He calls and tells me that he wants me, wants me
And then he tells me that he's never felt this way
I told him "Boy, you better stay away"
Should′ve had him begging for more
It was unbelievable
One, two, three, four
Oh oh, I just made out with your boyfriend
That's right, but we only did it one time
Oh oh, I didn′t know he was your boyfriend
That's right, and that′ll be the last time
Oh oh, I just made out with your boyfriend
That's right, but we only did it one time
Oh oh, I didn't know he was your boyfriend
That′s right, and that′ll be the last time
I make out with your boyfriend
I, I, I just made out with your boyfriend
I, I, I just made out with your boyfriend
I, I, I just made out with your boyfriend
I, I, I just made out with your boyfriend
You can have him back
You can have him back, back, back
You can have him back
I never wanted that
You can have him back
You can have him back, back, back
You can have him back
I never wanted that
Oh oh, I just made out with your boyfriend
That's right, but we only did it one time
Oh oh, I didn′t know he was your boyfriend
That's right, and that′ll be the last time
Oh oh, I just made out with your boyfriend
That's right, but we only did it one time
Oh oh, I didn′t know he was your boyfriend
That's right, and that'll be the last time
(You can have him back
You can have him back, back, back)
I make out with your boyfriend
(You can have him back
You can have him back, back, back)
Yeah
The lyrics to Fefe Dobson's "I Made Out With Your Boyfriend" tell the story of an encounter at a party where the singer is approached by an attractive person. This person persuades her to follow them to a private area, promising something special to see. The singer is curious and agrees, while being told to close her eyes and count to ten. This sets the stage for a surprising revelation.
As the singer reaches the count of four, it becomes clear that she had made out with someone who turns out to be the boyfriend of another person. She expresses her ignorance about his relationship status and assures that it will not happen again. She acknowledges her mistake and declares that the other person can "have him back." It seems clear that she had no intention of stealing him away or causing any pain.
Despite the unexpected encounter, the boyfriend starts pursuing the singer afterward, claiming he wants her and confessing his newfound emotions. However, the singer remains firm in her refusal, warning him to stay away. She reflects on the situation, realizing that she should have left him wanting more, suggesting that the initial encounter was meant to be an enticing but short-lived experience.
The chorus repeats the confession of making out with the boyfriend, emphasizing that it happened only once and expressing the singer's surprise about his relationship status. She firmly states that it will be the last time she engages with him in such a way. The repetition of the chorus signifies the singer's determination to move on from this situation and avoid further entanglement.
In the final lines, the singer reaffirms that the boyfriend is not what she desires. She flips the power dynamics, stating that she never wanted him in the first place. The song ends with a confident declaration that the other person can indeed have him back, emphasizing the singer's disinterest and independence.
Overall, "I Made Out With Your Boyfriend" explores a moment of unexpected attraction and the subsequent realization of a relationship betrayal. It showcases the singer's refusal to engage further and reestablishes her agency, asserting that the other person can have the boyfriend back.
