Dobson co-wrote Miley Cyrus' single "Start All Over" and in 2010 she released her third studio album "Joy".
Dobson was discovered and signed by Jive Records in 2000. The record label wanted to give her a traditional pop star image. Dobson, however, wanted more guitar and to include some of her own written songs. Jive rejected the idea, so she left the record company. She found herself singing in a Toronto bar at 8:30 in the morning. It turned out a CEO at The Island Def Jam Music Group was in the bar that very morning. He wanted to sign her. They signed her up on the wrong lyrics. She sang her song "Stupid Little Love Song" and what the people thought she sang was "Stupid Little Buzz Saw" which they thought was "genius".
She met producer Jay Levine through Island Records and they began working on her music. “He just really let me be free. He found something in me that he really thought was special, it was just fate”. When in the recording studio, she hung up inspirational pictures of Kurt Cobain, Judy Garland, Coldplay, Jeff Buckley and the Vines, to help motivate her sound and to commemorate the artists who influenced her.
Dobson's self-titled debut album was released December 9, 2003 by Island Records and sold 307,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Four singles were released from the album; "Bye Bye Boyfriend," "Take Me Away", "Everything", and "Don't Let Me Fall". "Take Me Away" and "Everything" were used in the film The Perfect Score.
During much of 2004, Dobson promoted her debut album, appearing for a live performance on TRL and numerous magazine covers and articles. Dobson made an appearance on NBC's TV series American Dreams where she played the role of Tina Turner, covering the song "River Deep, Mountain High". She was also the opening act on Justin Timberlake's European tour. That July, she released a new single, "Don't Go (Girls and Boys)", which was also featured in a Tommy Hilfiger commercial starring the singer. The album was later reissued with that single added. Dobson also had a new song, "If You Walk Away", on the soundtrack of Raising Helen.
Dobson released "Truth Anthem" on the Much Dance 2005 CD compilation, a benefit for the Canadian branch of War Child. In April 2005, Dobson was nominated for two Juno Awards, Pop Album of the Year and New Artist of the Year; both categories were won by Avril Lavigne. In the summer of 2005, Dobson was in a public service ad "Make Poverty History", which brings awareness to child poverty worldwide.
This Is My Life

We are always apart
I know you hate this
But please don't end it
There must be a way
I wish I could stay
When I met you
I was lost in the dark
With the love that you'd been givin'
I'm back from the dead
With you in my head
'Cause when I look in your eyes I know you understand
The good things always seem to slip right through my hands
And everything I love is just grains of sand
With you this is my life
This is my life
All day long I'm OK while I'm working
But it hits me at night
When every part of me for you is hurting
I go through withdrawals
I love you that's all
'Cause when I look in your eyes I know you understand
The good things always seem to slip right through my hands
And everything I love is just grains of sand
With you this is my life
This is my life
Why does it always have to be like this
Always desperate and a goodbye kiss
Now I'm back from the dead
With you in my head
'Cause when I look in your eyes I know you understand
The good things always seem to slip right through my hands
And everything I love is just grains of sand
With you this is my life
This is my life
At first, the lyrics of Fefe Dobson's "This Is My Life" may seem straightforward. The singer of the song is in love with her partner, but struggles with the distance and constant separation that comes with their relationship. She expresses a fear of losing them, and an intense desire to make things work. However, the song's underlying themes of pain, loss, and desperation reveal a deeper meaning.
The lyrics paint a portrait of a person who was broken before finding the love of their life. The line "When I met you, I was barely living, I was lost in the dark" suggests that the singer was struggling with something before finding their partner. Perhaps they were dealing with depression, addiction, or heartbreak. Whatever it was, they were able to pull themselves back together because of the love and care their partner has given them. This is what makes the pain of the separation even more intense - they feel that they must cling to their partner in order to maintain their newfound emotional stability.
The lines "The good things always seem to slip right through my hands, and everything I love is just grains of sand" speak to the fragility of happiness and the fear of losing something that brings joy. The singer knows that good things don't last forever, and is afraid that their relationship will fall apart. Because they have already experienced pain and loss, they are acutely aware of how vulnerable they are. The song ends on a note of hopelessness and resignation, with the singer acknowledging that they may be doomed to repeat their pain over and over again.
