Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti And The Africa 70's song "Zombie" are a direct attack on the Nigerian government and its military. The song compares soldiers to mindless zombies who are only capable of doing what they are told, without questioning orders or using their own minds. The repeated lines of "Zombie no go go unless you tell 'em to go" and "Zombie no go think unless you tell 'em to think" drive home the point that soldiers are being used as pawns by those in power. The song encourages soldiers to disobey orders that go against their conscience and to stand up for their rights as human beings.

"Zombie" was released in 1976, during the reign of General Yakubu Gowon, who had been in power since 1966. Fela's criticism of the government and military made him a target of authoritarian regimes and he was imprisoned several times during his career. The song was banned in Nigeria and many other African countries but still became a hit.

The lyrics of "Zombie" were a powerful reflection of the political turmoil in Nigeria at the time. The military government was accused of corruption, human rights abuses, and suppressing dissent. Fela's music was a way for people to express their frustrations and anger at the government, and his message spread throughout Africa and the world.
