The Song from Moulin Rouge
Felicia Sanders Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When ever we kiss,
I worry and wonder.
Your lips may be near,
but where is your heart?

It's always like this,
I worry and wonder.
You're close to me here,
but where is your heart?

It's a sad thing to realize
that you've a heart that never melts.
When we kiss, do you close your eyes,
pretending that I'm someone else?

You must break the spell,
this cloud that I'm under.

So please won't you tell, darling,
where is your heart?

Overall Meaning

The Song from Moulin Rouge by Felicia Sanders is a melancholic, yet beautiful ballad about the uncertainty and worry that comes with an unrequited love. The first two lines of the song set the tone of the lyrics, as the singer wonders about the true intentions behind the kisses shared with their beloved. They express their concern that while they may be physically close, their partner's heart may not be. The phrase "but where is your heart" is repeated twice in both stanzas, emphasizing the uncertainty and anxiety that the singer feels about the authenticity of their partner's emotions.

In the second stanza, the lyrics become even more poignant as the singer realizes that their partner may never truly feel the depth of their love. The line "It's a sad thing to realize that you've a heart that never melts" suggests that despite their efforts, the singer may never be able to break through their partner's emotional barriers. The lyrics take on a bittersweet tone as the singer questions whether their partner may even be pretending that they are someone else when they kiss.

The final stanza becomes a plea for the partner to reveal the truth about their heart. The repetition of the phrase "where is your heart" becomes even more pronounced as the singer begs their beloved to break the spell and let them know where they truly stand. The Song from Moulin Rouge is a heart-rending ballad about the complexities of love and the pain that comes with loving someone who may not love you back.

I was born in 1953 and my Mom, who is now in Heaven, would later tell me that when this song came on the radio I would stop moving in my cradle and make sounds trying to follow the music... <3 I miss you Mom and Dad and mu older brothers who had such good taste in music <3

I was thinking the same thing.... such a beautiful emotional rendition. I use to play this song when I was a child and never forgot how beautiful this particular recording of it was. I also like how lush the instrumental intro was. It was a work of art!!

I'll never forget that opening! When I was eight, my mother and I went to Ft. Worth one weekend where her best friend from college days lived, an old maid school teacher named Judith, about 50, and we went to see this movie. We liked it so much Judith bought the record. When we got back to the house, she played it and every time I hear that opening I'm right back there in Ft. Worth as an eight year old!

Music has that magical quality of transporting us back to a different place & a different time. This song was a favorite of my dearly departed mom & dad. When I listen to it, they are with me once again, in a happier place & a simpler time.
