The Same Tattoos
Fences Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

nd I was born in the same town as you,
Hell, I even think we have the same tattoos.
Mother hates it when I smile and she sees you coming through me,
Like the sun shines through thin glass.
It's not like you were really gone, gone, gone, gone,
But you were and I never felt love.
It's not like you were really gone, gone, gone, gone,
But you were and I never felt love.
My uncle gave me on the day that I turned 13,
A black box that said "Gillette," rusted and scratched,
And it was full of memories and memorabilia,
And a necklace with a saint I wore in class.
It's not like you were really gone, gone, gone, gone,
But you were and I never felt love.
It's not like you were really gone, gone, gone, gone,
But you were and I never felt love.
It's not like you were really gone, gone, gone, gone,
But you were and I never felt love.

It's not like you were really gone, gone, gone gone,
But you were and I never felt love.

Overall Meaning

In Fences's song, The Same Tattoos, the lyrics describe the complicated emotions that the singer feels towards someone they have a shared history with. The singer reveals that they were born in the same town as this person and that they even have the same tattoos, implying that they have a deep connection. However, the relationship seems to be strained as the singer's mother does not approve of their bond. The singer struggles with the emotions that come with this relationship and how they are still affected by this person even though they were never really gone. The lyrics "Like the sun shines through thin glass" suggest that even though they are still present in the singer's life, their bond is fragile and easily shattered.

The second half of the song delves deeper into the singer's past and their connection to this person. The singer's uncle gifted them a black box full of memories and memorabilia, including a necklace with a saint that the singer would wear in class. The significance of the box and the necklace is unclear, but they serve as a reminder of the past and the singer's connection to this person. The singer again repeats the phrase "It's not like you were really gone" suggesting that this person has always been present in their life, yet they never felt real love from them.

Overall, the song explores the complexity of emotional ties and the lasting impact that certain people can have on our lives. The shared history and lasting memories that the singer has with this individual are significant, but it seems that the relationship has been affected by outside forces and a lack of true emotional connection.
