Fenech-Soler Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Go, laughing
Circle like a bird of prey
And it hides the darkness
Take a shot and walk away

All I need
Is a smile forever
I could be
More than the face of a stranger

And nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody
Has to know that you care
That I'm
Somebody, somebody, somebody
Something more than thin air

And nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody
Has to know that you care
That I'm
Somebody, somebody, somebody
Something more than thin air

Like a robot
I'm frozen when I'm in your room
As your spell
Flies past me
I've had courage but it all fell through

All I dream
Is your smile forever
I could be
More than the face of a stranger

And nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody
Has to know that you care
That I'm
Somebody, somebody, somebody
Something more than thin air

And nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody
Has to know that you care
That I'm
Somebody, somebody, somebody
Something more than thin air

All I need
Is a smile forever
I could be
More than the face of a stranger, oh oh

And nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody
Has to know that you care
That I'm
Somebody, somebody, somebody
Something more than thin air

And nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody
Has to know that you care
That I'm

Somebody, somebody, somebody
Something more than thin air

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Fenech-Soler's song "Somebody" are about wanting to be seen and recognized by someone, despite feeling like they are invisible or unimportant. The song begins with the line "go, laughing circle like a bird of prey," which suggests that the person the singer is addressing is someone who is confident and in control. The imagery of the "bird of prey" suggests power and domination, while the "laughter" suggests a carefree attitude. However, this person is hiding their inner darkness and when they "take a shot and walk away", they are ignoring the singer who wants to be noticed.

The chorus repeats the phrase "nobody has to know that you care" twice to emphasize that this person should not be afraid to show their feelings towards the singer. The lyrics suggest that the singer doesn't want to be just a "face of a stranger" and there is a desire to be recognized as "somebody, somebody, somebody" who is "something more than thin air". This repeated phrase shows the desperation to be seen and validated by someone, and to no longer feel invisible.

The second verse describes the singer's fear and inability to act when they are in the presence of this person. They feel "frozen" like a "robot" and unable to express their true feelings. The line "I've had courage but it all fell through" suggests that the singer has tried to speak up before, but they were not successful. They continue to dream of the person's smile and the possibility that they could be more than just a stranger.
