Drunken Sailor
Ferre Grignard Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What shall we do with a drunken sailor? (3x)
Early in the morning
Hurray, and up she rises (3x)
Early in the morning

Hoist to the ball with a running bowline (3x)
Early in the morning
Put him in the marine untill he's sober (3x)
Early in the morning
Hurray, and up she rises (3x)
Early in the morning

What shall we do with a drunken sailor? (3x)
Early in the morning

Hurray, and up she rises (3x)
Early in the morning

Overall Meaning

Ferre Grignard's song "Drunken Sailor" is a traditional sea shanty that has been popular for centuries. The lyrics can be interpreted in many different ways, but the most popular interpretation is that the song is about a sailor who has had too much to drink and is causing problems for his crewmates. The crew is trying to decide what to do with him, and the lyrics suggest that they might put him in the marine (i.e. the brig or holding cell) until he sobers up.

The repetition of the opening line, "What shall we do with a drunken sailor?" suggests that the crew is struggling to find a solution to the problem. The verses that follow offer some suggestions, but they are not very helpful. The line "hoist to the ball with a running bowline" is a nautical reference that suggests that the crew might be considering tying up the drunken sailor so that he doesn't cause any more trouble. The final verse repeats the opening line again, and suggests that the issue has not been resolved, and that the crew is still struggling to find a solution.

Line by Line Meaning

What shall we do with a drunken sailor? (3x)
What actions should we take in response to a sailor who is drunk, and possibly unable to function normally? This question is repeated three times to emphasize the need for a decision.

Early in the morning
The time of day is mentioned to provide context for the situation. This suggests that the sailor likely became drunk during the previous day or night.

Hurray, and up she rises (3x)
This line is a reference to waking up or getting out of bed. The repetition suggests that multiple people are involved in the situation and are preparing to take action.

Hoist to the ball with a running bowline (3x)
This line is metaphorical, and refers to taking action to control the situation. 'Hoisting to the ball' may indicate attempting to lift or move the sailor, while 'running bowline' suggests a tying or binding action.

Put him in the marine until he's sober (3x)
This line suggests a disciplinary action, likely involving a 'marine' or naval prison or confinement. The repetition emphasizes the need to keep the sailor in confinement until he is recovered from his state of intoxication.

Hurray, and up she rises (3x)
Again, this line emphasizes the need for action and the involvement of multiple people in taking control of the situation.

What shall we do with a drunken sailor? (3x)
This final repetition of the initial question emphasizes the need for a resolution to the situation. It suggests that while some action has been taken, the problem of the drunken sailor is not yet resolved.

Early in the morning
This final line adds closure to the song, returning to the original setting and time of day. It suggests that the problem may persist into the future, as there is no clear solution provided.
