Jolene
Ferreck Dawn Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm begging of you, Please don't take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don't take him just because you can
Your beauty is beyond compare
With flaming locks of auburn hair
With ivory skin
And eyes of emerald green
Your voice is soft like summer rain
And I cannot compete with you,
Jolene
He talks about you in his sleep
And there's nothing I can do to keep
From crying when he calls your name,
Jolene
And I can easily understand
How you could easily take my man
But you don't know what he means to me,
Jolene
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
I'm begging of you,
Please don't take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don't take him
Just because you can
You could have your choice of man
But I could never love again
He's the only one for me,
Jolene
I had to have this talk with you,
My happines depends on you
And whatever you decide to do,
Jolene
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
I'm begging of you,
Please don't take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don't take him
Eventhough you can
Jolene
Jolene
The lyrics of Ferreck Dawn's "Jolene" depict the emotional turmoil of a woman who's afraid of losing her man to a more beautiful and desirable woman named Jolene. The singer is pleading with Jolene not to take her man, acknowledging her beauty and allure, praising her flaming locks of auburn hair, ivory skin, emerald green eyes, and enchanting smile. She knows she can't compare to her and feels helpless because Jolene's name is always on her man's lips even when he sleeps.
The singer understands that Jolene could easily take her man, but she begs her not to do so, as he's the only one for her. She admits that Jolene could have any man she wanted, but she could never love again. The lyrics portray a sense of vulnerability, fear and desperation for the singer, who even told Jolene that her happiness depends on her.
Overall, the song portrays the universal theme of jealousy, insecurity and the fear of losing someone you deeply love. It's relatable to anyone who has experienced the feeling of being threatened by someone else's beauty, charm or personality.
