We raised our kids this way. When I explain this to new parents, they don’t seem to understand. I’ve tried to explain how it works as well—that in the middle of the night it will be at its highest, so they should not panic, but stay the course. I’ve explained that its job is to kill the virus, and that if they keep lowering the fever, the sickness will be with them longer. Letting a fever go will mean a shorter bout of illness. Also, it keeps the sick kid in bed where they can rest—instead of running around the house, acting like they’re not sick—because the fever has been lowered enough so they don’t feel sick.

Sepsis can also present with low fever. Learn the symptoms and seek help early and state your suspicions. Better to be wrong them dead or without limbs, or even your face.

At a minimum you should probably get checked out if a fever lingers or gets too high, in my opinion. Some people take advice like this as the gospel and may never see a doctor for a fever and have sepsis or something else harmful.

When this RN had Covid, I never treated the fever, even though it stayed around 103 and the upper 102’s. I just piled on blankets when I was chilling and dealt with it. I knew that was my body fighting it and I didn’t want to interfere with that. Obviously, I survived and with no ill effects.

Side tip: If it’s safe for you, try visiting a sauna at the first sign of illness or after being exposed to someone who’s sick. The heat helps simulate a fever, which can activate your body’s natural antiviral response and potentially stop the virus before it takes hold. You don't need to treat a low-grade fever ...anything higher than 103.5 needs medical intervention, especially if other symptoms are present. Such as stiff neck, seizures, vomiting, or confusion...or if person has other medical conditions like diabetes. These conditions can mean a life threatening infection.

103,5 F = 39,7 C Well, the last time my husband had a fever of 39,5 C he was feeling so weak and confused that he thought he might die... In my country doctors advise anti-piretics like paracetamol only if the fever reaches 38,5C (101,3F) and tends going up and never goes down on it's own. I know kids that are prone to convulsions at the slightest hint of fever even when they just go over 37,5C (99,5F), so they have to anticipate the rise with taking meds earlier. Normaly, stuff like paracetamol it can take approximately even up to 1hr to make effect and start breaking the fever, but in the meanwhile the fever rises. I got a huge scare one night when my 1 yearold woke up in the middle of the night super hot all over, yelling like crazy and it was summer and when I tried to measure the temperature, the thermometer was running over 41C and wasn't slowing down, 41,1 point 2, point 3 and I was totaly freaked out becouse I remembered my highschool biology teacher saying once that internal and external temperatures are different, inside is higher, so potentially when one reaches 42C and fever doesn't seem to stop going up, there's a high risk of initiating the process of blood coagulation in the body, so I didn't even let the termometer finish the measurment and I was undressing my kid while ordering my husband around becouse he was panicking, I just left the diaper on and I made her sit on the edge of bidet (cold shower seemed too harsh and sink was small), then I opened up the cold water and started wetting her leggs, arms, neck, face and at first she was crying, but in a minute she got acclimating, stopped shivering and started playing with water, having fun splashing water and I sent her dad to bring me the paracetamol. In 10 minutes of playing with cold water in 86°F home environment, her temperature went down to 38,9C. From that day on, even when my kids were even slightly feverish, I'd never sleep through the entire night without setting alarm clocks to check up on how their fever's doing... but basicly they managed to build a strong immune system in the first 6-7 years of their life, and since then they catch a flue like once every 10 years...

Generally speaking I don't try to suppress any symptoms. Occasionally I have to balance potentially prolonging an illness against something else. For instance, I might take a cough suppressant/congestion suppressant at night if I can't sleep because of the symptoms. That's despite knowing my body is getting gunk out of my system with those symptoms.

A high fever is nothing to dismiss. If it is too high, it will become detrimental. Take a child with 105 degree fever to an emergency room and they become the next patient to be attended to. No waiting, no lineup.

And here's the explanation: when your temperature rises it's the immune system heating up the blood to thin it so that the white blood cells can travel faster to the Virus/infection to act at the earliest possible time, but Do not try to increase nor decrease the temperature as you will slow done the process!

Absolutely. I never take anything for a fever. I had Covid (it turned out) the Christmas before the pandemic was declared. I got very hot indeed. I used cool flannels on my head. I took nothing at all. In two days it burned itself out. A family member took constant meds to lower the fever and it hung on her for several weeks. That happens with normal colds etc as well. People around me who 'take' things for it always have lingering symptoms.

I read some recent research on gout couple years ago. The study showed that your body is producing that acid to cure or fix a problem within your body. So in that way, gout would be similar to the fever. The pain in the feet is just an unfortunate side effect.

Normally up to 40C is normal response and body will self-regulate quickly. I had it few times and after few hours sweating kicks in and next day infection is normally over. If we have normal immune response.

I understand that there’s no need to reduce fever in one sense, but anti-pyretics such as paracetamol ( tylenol?) etc make one soooo much more comfortable, and a report I saw ( can’t find it at present), concluded that the course and outcome of the disease was not impacted by taking these and reducing fever/aches etc.
So why not relieve aches and pains associated with fever?
