Red Trails
Fever Ray Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blood was our favorite paint
You were my favourite pain
Waiting for your love to happen
Is like waiting for a drug that never kicks in

Left traces, red trails
Oceans, prayers, dance
You're in this radiance
Dismantled love
Touching in the snow one day
Laying low and kissing

Setting the snow on fire
Watching over vivid dreams
This too will pass
Under the moon we last
Arranging my friend's scenery
And inviting them to sing

Blood was our favorite paint
You were my favourite pain

Scratches when skin's too thin
Throwing me someone new to take in

Overall Meaning

In Fever Ray's song Red Trails, the lyrics describe a passionate and toxic relationship where the idea of pain and blood is romanticized, with "Blood was our favorite paint, You were my favorite pain". It's like the two lovers are caught in their obsession with each other, but at the same time, they know that they are hurting each other with the intensity of their feelings. "Scratches when skin's too thin, Throwing me someone new to take in". They are continuously hurting each other while still being drawn together, and it seems that the anticipation of love seems more exhilarating than the actual experience, as "Waiting for your love to happen, Is like waiting for a drug that never kicks in".

The lyrics are introspective and raw, showcasing the complexity of the relationship, with the feelings of love, passion, hurt, and obsession. The imagery used in the lyrics is vivid and intense, creating a potent atmosphere, with lines like "Setting the snow on fire" and "Touching in the snow one day". The song creates a dark and eerie feeling with its eerie synths, the haunting backing vocals, and the ethereal echoes.

Fever Ray - "Red Trails"

Blood was our favourite paint
You were my favourite pain
Waiting for your love to happen
Is like waiting for a drug that never kicks in

Left traces, red trails
Ocean spray us, dance
Your endless radiance
Dismantle us
Touching in the snow one day
Laying low and kissing

Setting the snow on fire
Watching over vivid dreams
This too will pass
Under the moon we last
Arranging my friend's scenery
And inviting them to sing

Blood was our favourite paint

Wonderful song. Those violin strings wonderfully build the pain of a heart. Such a lyrical pain.

Feel the pain of the heart. Be one with it it. Touch it. Explore it... Fuck it... Do all what is needed to understand the lyrical pain <3

Now THIS is more like what I LOVE about the first album, this style of surreal lyrics, dreamy beats.

Joseph Bicalho

so far the best track of the record

EnosEverything

Yes I have to agree with that... I've listened to six of the tracks so far and despite the high rating on Metacritic I don't think it's a patch on the brilliant FEVER RAY debut album from a few years back.

I definitely agree with you Pikkabuu. I love the album in its entirety <3

Pikkabuu

I think that the positive reception this song has is due to it being closest song in the album to the tone of her earlier album.

Joseph Bicalho
