Hate
Fiction Plane Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We're cool we're different
And we hate things
Yeah we hate things
We hate people

Take a stand and we will cut you down
Be yourself and we'll call you a liar
Be somebody else and we'll
Set you on fire
Keep yourself to yourself and
We don't care if you die yeah

Don't tell me to look at myself
I know that I don't exist
I am perfect and I don't exist
In your stupid human world

Before you tell me what you
Think's in my mind
There's something there that I've been
Trying to find
About the day that I woke up to decide
The world is ugly and I want to be blind

Take a minute to think what's right
You'll be up until the end of the night
Best forget that peoples'
Problems are there
Turn on the tv, sit there and stare

Just what's wrong with us
Is hard to explain
You know it's easier to kill than create
Building happiness it seems
There's no time

We spend our days here thinking
Love is a crime

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Fiction Plane's song 'Hate' portray a feeling of detachment from the world, along with a sense of anti-establishment. The first stanza mentions that the singer is different from others and hates various things, including people. They take offense to anyone who disagrees with them, and rebel from any kind of conformity. The lines "Be yourself and we'll call you a liar, be somebody else and we'll set you on fire" describe how any attempt at compromising with their ideology is futile and will be met with resistance.

Subsequently, the lyrics criticize societal norms and values, such as the pressure to conform and lack of empathy. The lines "Keep yourself to yourself and we don't care if you die yeah" suggests the singer's disdain towards social relationships and emotional attachment. There is also a sense of disillusionment with reality, with the lines "Don't tell me to look at myself, I know that I don't exist" and "In your stupid human world." In the latter stanza, the lyrics reflect on a particular event or realization that made the singer decide to reject society and all its constructs.

Overall, the song 'Hate' reveals a desire for detachment and a rejection of societal values, with a strong anti-establishment sentiment.

I remember being at a Sting concert once where they opened for him. People in front of me were discussing and wondering who they were, and I was thinking "are you actually blind AND deaf. 😂 He ever does his dads little guitar jumps!

One a my fave Fiction Plane songs ever. Written and delivered flawlessly with such style.
I saw them in California... way back... God, that was a long time ago for what I still think of as a young band. On the Apple Campus during the developer conference back in... 1999? Or was it 2004? I forget which. Loved the show. Went to the stage between sets to buy their CD. The guy selling them had no change so he just sold me the first album for $10 even. I bought it and said how much I enjoyed the show so far. Then realized during that the second set, that the guy I bought it from was Joe. The important thing was getting the music out. Came back to Canada and played it for everyone. Had an Internet radio station too and let's just say the whole album got good airtime for ... dozens of listeners. ;) Thanks for the music guys, it's still fresh today.

Bestiary

Still love this band.
