Since the group's creation in 1998, it has performed music from every genre ranging from Pop, Rock, R&B, Hip-Hop, Country, Classical, Choral and Jazz to original compositions by members of the group. Along with performing at venues and putting on two concerts throughout the year, Fifth Element typically tours in the second week in January. Going all across the Midwest, the group performs concerts and puts on workshops in high school and elementary schools, teaching students about the history of music, a capella music, the human voice, and an introduction to vocal percussion, as well as telling students of all ages to continue singing throughout their lives.
Recent note-worthy accomplishments by the group include being chosen for Ben Folds’s ‘Ben Folds Presents: University A Capella’ Album for their rendition of “Fair”. Fifth Element was also chosen for their recording of “So Insane” for CASA’s National Release of ‘Sing 7’, an a capella compellation album of groups from across the United States. Fifth Element just released their newest album, "Runaway", which was recently nominated for Best Hip-Hop/R&B Song and Best Male Collegiate Solo for the 2011 Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards.

The role of Diva Plavalaguna was played by the French actress Maiwenn, who at the time of the production of the film was in a civil marriage with Luc Besson .The aria "Il dolce suono" from the opera "Lucia di Lammermoor" by composer Gaetano Donizetti in Italian was performed behind the scenes by the opera singer Inva Mula. Part of the aria of Lucia de Lamermoor Plavalaguna is performed with synthetic vocals (that is, voice, but without the use of words and together with music), sung not with a human voice, but created on a computer, since the human voice is not able to master such a range, characteristic of the legend of the film for Voices of Plavalaguna (at the time of filming, no person was found with the ability to perform in such a voice, but later this was refuted when the part was performed by Kazakh singer Dimash Kudaibergen). Luc Besson wanted to shoot the stage on which Diva performed the aria in France, but could not find a suitable scene, and the shooting had to be moved to London in Royal Covent Garden, as well as to 007 Stage studio. For some time in various publications it was believed that the voice of the opera diva was the voice of the singer of Inca origin Ima Sumak.
