Sound of Silence
Filipa Jeronimo Lyrics

Hello darkness, my old friend,
I've come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone,
'Neath the halo of a street lamp,
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dare
Disturb the sound of silence.

"Fools" said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell,
And echoed
In the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning,
In the words that it was forming.
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets

Are written on the subway walls

And tenement halls."
And whisper'd in the sounds of silence.

Overall Meaning

Filipa Jeronimo's song "Sound of Silence" is a cover of Simon & Garfunkel's iconic track. The song is a reflection on the isolating nature of communication and the longing for human connection. The singer converses with "darkness" as he feels it's the only thing that will listen to him. The statement "hello darkness my old friend, I've come to talk with you again" sets the tone of the song as the singer seeks comfort in the darkness. While he was sleeping, he saw a vision that planted a feeling of unease, that still "remains within the sound of silence."

The second verse describes the singer's feeling of isolation while he walks alone through "narrow streets of cobblestone." He is surrounded by a crowd but feels disconnected as people are talking and hearing each other without really listening. He sees people writing songs that never get heard and feels like his own words are falling on deaf ears. He implores people to listen to him and warns them that "silence like a cancer grows." He wants to reach out and teach them, but his words fall like "silent raindrops" and "echo in the wells of silence."

In the third and final verse, the singer observes people worshipping the "neon god they made" and warning them of the words of the prophets written on "subway walls and tenement halls." The song ends with the whispering sound of silence. Overall, the lyrics of "Sound of Silence" evoke a feeling of melancholy and the longing for genuine human connections.
