Dose
Filter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I believe in something else
Now go bother someone else
Stick your fingers in your book
Take a better second look
You crook
I hate it when you breach my space
And I hate it when you preach your case
And you should go down
Down
Save someone else
I think I should warn you
I think I should tell
What you've been doing
It makes you go to hell
I hate it when you preach your case
It makes me want to stick my fist through
Your face
And you should go down
Down
Save someone else
Can your preacher bring me down?
Oh, that's what I thought
I hate it when you breach my space
And I hate it when you preach your case
And you should go down

Down
Save someone else

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Filter's song "Dose" seem to be addressing someone who is trying to impose their beliefs on the singer. The singer believes in something else and wants the other person to leave them alone. They perceive the other person as a "crook" and are frustrated by their attempts to breach their space and preach their case. The singer warns them that what they are doing will lead to their downfall and expresses a desire to physically retaliate against them. The repeated refrain of "save someone else" further emphasizes the singer's desire to be left alone and the futility of the other person's efforts to convert them.

Overall, the lyrics portray a sense of antagonism towards evangelism or any attempt to push a belief system onto someone. The singer asserts their autonomy and the validity of their own perspective, while also expressing a visceral reaction to the other person's behavior. It's unclear exactly what belief system the singer subscribes to or what the other person is trying to convert them to, but the lyrics seem to be more about the dynamics of persuasion and personal boundaries than any specific ideology.

I remember walking into a record store in 1995 when this first came out. The clerk was playing "Hey Man Nice Shot" on the stereo. Halfway through the song I asked, "Who's this?" he replies, "Filter." I nod, and continue shopping... "Dose" comes on next. I RUN back to the clerk, "Where is it? I'm buying it."

I really miss this sound.  I keep going back to Short Bus, it is this masterful little disc of pure angry awesome noise, definitely one of my 90s faves.

Same here, one of my all time favorite albums I can go back to and listen to all the way through. I lost touch with them when they got real soft.
