Criminal
Fiona Apple Lyrics

I've been a bad, bad girl
I've been careless with a delicate man
And it's a sad, sad world
When a girl will break a boy just because she can

Don't you tell me to deny it
I've done wrong and I want to suffer for my sins
I've come to you 'cause I need guidance to be true
And I just don't know where I can begin
Ooh, what I need is a good defense
'Cause I'm feeling like a criminal
And I need to be redeemed
To the one I've sinned against
Because he's all I ever knew of love

Heaven help me for the way I am
Save me from these evil deeds before I get them done
I know tomorrow brings the consequence at hand
But I keep living this day like the next will never come

Oh, help me but don't tell me to deny it
I've got to cleanse myself of all these lies 'til I'm good enough for him
I've got a lot to lose and I'm bettin' high so I'm begging you
Before it ends just tell me where to begin

What I need is a good defense
'Cause I'm feeling like a criminal
And I need to be redeemed
To the one I've sinned against
Because he's all I ever knew of love

Let me know the way
Before there's hell to pay
Give me room to lay the law and let me go
I've got to make a play
To make my lover stay
So what would an angel say the devil wants to know

What I need is a good defense
'Cause I'm feeling like a criminal
And I need to be redeemed
To the one I've sinned against
Because he's all I ever knew of love

What I need is a good defense
'Cause I'm feeling like a criminal
And I need to be redeemed
To the one I've sinned against
Because he's all I ever knew of love

You have got to hand it to Fiona Apple for really laying it out there with this song, and then really incredible video performance. It sucks you in like a really good piece of art does. And it’s a very honest effort as she makes little to no apology for her bad behavior, practically warning you to stay away. But you don’t because her smile gets you every time.

It was the 90s. Females are in the rise everywhere, pushing boundaries. And Fiona pushes it here, falling just short of indecent to enough degree to allow this video to be the popular and successful record it was. The music is somewhat generic and slick, slinking along, expertly played and with a somewhat complex but very infectious groove that has you moving your body more and more as the song continues.

So you’re already in the groove when she shows up and right away starts a straight 411 download, informing you this is not going to be typical conversation. She then lets you into her world where her bad girl behavior is on full display. She reveals herself to you. As in…physically; removing any…err…thought that you might get out of this unscathed. She straddles the fine line between slutty and sexy so well.

You get that feeling she’s not really a slut and that she is confessing her bad behavior as a way of seeking redemption. You convince yourself that there is a happy outcome possible. One that ends with marriage, two and a half kids, and a lot of crazy memories. You want to believe!

But you know this won’t be the last or only conversation like this. Sooner or later the bad girl is gonna need her fix. So you better rise to the challenge. Be bad yourself, or when necessary. Or turn around walk out the door before it’s too late.

The 90s were the decade of the rise to ascendancy of women, especially in the arts, where it has now today likely eclipsed the popularity of men. But this achievement took a number of important steps. And one of them is Fiona Apple. Compared to nowadays, with the benefit of perspective, this is shockingly real and honest In a way that you just can’t be today, where we see corporate advertising dollars spent on social media are exerting a sort of control on content that seems weirdly both puritanical (yes, in the Mennonite sense), and also paranoid (in the well, just paranoid sense). And so we have very generic, mostly safe stuff today making it on to the mainstream charts and consciousness. I remember, however, that c. Wawswderthis did push the limits of just how sexual or even slutty you could be and get away with it. But also there weren’t too many videos quite like this because there are not many Fiona Apple’s in the biz. I mean it helps when you have a rare combination of looks, camera presence and acting, and a unique sultry baritone voice like Ms. Apple. Even the name - Apple - daring you to take that first bite. Go ahead…take it. You know you want to.

verse1/ bridge1/ chorus/ verse2/ bridge2/ chorus/ breakdown- reprise/ chorus.
Its a typical 90s pop/rock composition. The difference in bridges leading to the chorus is what dude is thinking ismagical songwriting. Its simple pop all ears can understand to pay the bills.

Rant time: to all the bias dummys with the "shes been through so much" bullshit. I dated a narcissist coke addict with a sex addiction with other random people to feel wanted during a monogamous relationship and somehow make the partner the asshole when they care enough to not want to share the person they love with the rest of the towns gross population. I tried to do the same, as i had a pretty face like her and had good luck at bars if i so wanted. I couldnt never stoop to that level.

The song is contradictory throughout. The only things shes "been through" is self inflicted pain of needing to feel wanted or "good enough" by sleeping with a bunch of good guys. Hurting them and bringing out the worst in them by sleeping with everyone and then making them feel the one at fault for making them sleep with everyone and to "feel wanted". Instead of talking it out rationally not saying hurtful shit to get a coursed bad reaction by learning what to say to make someones stomach turn(pushingbottons) to make sleeping with other people feel a little more justified, when it totally isnt.

But in reality cocaine will do this to women of this age. Especially an undercover narcissist. Theyre the most dangerous. Once you have them figured out they will do what they can to ruin your reputation and mark said lover(or one of them) as abusive. When in reality the mental abuse done in the shadows by the "victim" is far worse than the reaction portrayed in public by the "abusive"Just as they planned they knew what would happen.

Now they are the victim to the group and can keep preying while you get shunned by your so called friends. Who only see the wall punching, not the cheating lies and awful things said leading up to punting her favorite stuffed animal or calling them a cunt.

Who wouldn't punch a wall finding out youve been in an open relationship for a year but was never told was open at the beginning. Its not ok to fuck another person to feel better about yourself unless all parties are aware and never ok to manipulate a person to react poorly in the limelight by saying awful things in the sidelines. The choices we make are up to us. No one is obligated to tell you not to fuck everyone and do cocaine. And its never ok to mess with anyones head in the dark to a breaking point we all have, to get an equal reaction when everyone is looking.....no one should have to remind you to be a good person.

Fiona apple is 100 percent a narcissistic wolf in sheeps clothing that creates her own problems that no one should praise for having to go through. Cocaine and whoremoans never mix. Especially when youre a pretty smart talented girl that uses sex and fuck with peoples emotions to fill their own holes and self worth. People dont recover from shit like that.

I've been a bad, bad girl
I've been careless
With a delicate man
And it's a sad, sad world
When a girl will break a boy
Just because she can

[Pre-Chorus]
Don't you tell me to deny it
I've done wrong and
I want to suffer for my sins
I've come to you cause
I need guidance to be true
And I just don't know where I can begin

[Chorus]
What I need is a good defense
Cause I'm feeling like a criminal
And I need to be redeemed
To the one I've sinned against
Because he's all I ever knew of love

[Verse 2]
Heaven help me for the way I am
Save me from these evil deeds
Before I get them done
I know tomorrow brings
The consequence at hand
But I keep living this day
Like the next will never come

[Pre-Chorus]
Oh help me,
But don't tell me to deny it
I've got to cleanse myself
Of all these lies
Till I'm good enough for him
I've got a lot to lose
And I'm betting high
So I'm begging you before it ends
Just tell me where to begin
Eh

[Chorus]
What I need is a good defense
Cause I'm feeling like a criminal
And I need to be redeemed
To the one I've sinned against
Because he's all I ever knew of love

[Bridge]
Let me know the way
Before there's hell to pay
Give me room to lay
The law and let me go
I've got to make a play
To make my lover stay
So what would an angel say?
The devil wants to know

What I need is a good defense
Cause I'm feeling like a criminal
And I need to be redeemed

Because he's all I ever knew of love

What I need is a good defense
Cause I'm feeling like a criminal
And I need to be redeemed
To the one I've sinned against
Because he's all I ever knew of love

This could debut in 2021 and still be as fresh as it was in the 90s. Flawless.

It's hard to believe Fiona's peers called her "dog" and bullied her at school. Like many of us she had a hard time growing up. She is utterly stunning and still is. I could see her being a damn good actress as well, I kinda wish she had done some acting
