Werewolf
Fiona Apple (Lossless) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I could liken you to a werewolf
The way you left me for dead
But I admit that I provided a full moon

And I could liken you to a shark
The way you bit off my head
But then again I was waving around a bleeding open wound
But you were such a super guy
'Til the second you get away from me
We're like a wishing well
And a bolt of electricity
But we could still support each other
All we gotta do is avoid each other
Nothing wrong when a song ends in the minor key
Nothing wrong when a song ends in the minor key

The lava of a volcano
Shot up hot from under the sea
One thing leads to another
And you made an island of me

And I could liken you to a chemical
The way you made me compound to compound
But I'm a chemical too
Inevitable you and me would mix

And I could liken you to a lot of things
But I always come around
'Cause in the end I'm a sensible girl
I know the fiction of the fix

But you were such a super guy
'Til the second you get away from me
We're like a wishing well
And a bolt of electricity
But we could still support each other
All we gotta do is avoid each other

Overall Meaning

In the song "Werewolf," Fiona Apple compares her former lover to various dangerous creatures and chemicals, illustrating how the relationship left her feeling drained, hurt, and betrayed. She likens him to a werewolf, suggesting that he turned vicious and left her for dead. However, she takes responsibility for her part in the breakup, acknowledging that she "provided a full moon," meaning she may have pushed him away. Similarly, she compares him to a shark who bit off her head, but also admits that she was waving around an open wound, suggesting that she may have been asking for trouble.

She then shifts the comparison to a volcano, indicating that their relationship was explosive and left her feeling like an isolated island. She compares him to a chemical, but acknowledges that she herself is also a chemical, indicating that they were inevitably going to mix, despite the harm it caused. In the end, Fiona suggests that they should avoid each other, despite still being able to support each other. The song ends on a melancholic note, emphasizing that there is nothing wrong with a song ending in the minor key.

Overall, "Werewolf" is a poignant reflection on a toxic and passionate relationship that left Fiona feeling vulnerable and exposed. The haunting melody, combined with Fiona's raw vocals and vivid imagery, create a powerful and emotional listening experience that will resonate with anyone who has experienced a tumultuous love affair.

Idler Wheel is my favorite album of hers. I was fortunate enough to see her live during its tour - the night AFTER her now-iconic arrest for marijuana possession. Her energy that night was absolutely electric.

This song in particular is just breath taking. the whole opening stanza -

"I could liken you to a werewolf
The way you left me for dead
But I admit that I provided a full moon
And I could liken you to a shark
The way you bit off my head
But then again I was waving around a bleeding open wound"

Just classic, brilliant poetry and songwriting.

I could liken you
To a werewolf
The way you left
Me for dead
But I admit that
I provided a full moon
And I could liken
You to a shark
The way you bit
Off my head
But then again
I was waving
Around a bleeding
Open wound

But
You are such a super guy
Till the second you
Get a whiff of me
We’re like a wishing well
And a bolt of electricity
But
We can still support each other,
All we gotta do is
Avoid each other

Nothing wrong when a song

The lava of the
Volcano shot up
Hot from under the sea
One thing leads
To another and
You made an island of me

And I could liken you
To a chemical the way
You made me
Compound a compound
But
I'm a chemical too
Inevitable you and
Me would mix
And I could liken you
To a lot of things but
I always come around
Cause in the end
I’m a sensible girl
I know the fiction
Of the fix

But
You are such a super guy
Till the second you
Get a whiff of me
We are like a wishing well
And a bolt of electricity
But
We can still support each other,
All we gotta do’s
Avoid each other

Fiona is a crazy genius. This is one gem among many on her latest. The chord progressions slay me. *sigh

Heather Ellis

I love how Fiona uses simplicity to her advantage on the new album. Like on this song for example, you're listening to an interesting piano part, a relatively straightforward melody, and thoughtful lyrics. It brings your focus in and let's the big picture of the song settle as a whole. I think it's really just brilliant. I love love love The Idler Wheel...!

There's no one else like Fiona. She's truly a gifted artist.

Paul Wilde

What about Lana del Ray and Tori Amos?

Justin Simmons

@Paul Wilde Lana isn't even in the same stratosphere as Fiona especially in terms of songwriting lol and while I like Tori, she's basically a knock off Kate Bush so I'd have argued Kate before I mentioned Tori. But hey that's just my opinion.

Paul Wilde

@Justin Simmons Tori lost her groove after Under the Pink. Tori did use Kate as an inspiration however Tori's early work was more truly personal than Kate's. Kate has always been theatrical. The personal does inform the theatrical with Kate though. Lana del Ray isn't generally the same and she isn't in the same league but some of Fiona Apple's recent work has been like Lana del Ray.

This is one of the best songs on the new album. "Nothing wrong when a song ends in a minor key" - ain't that the truth. Love Fiona.

Amber Hovanec-Carey

Proof that music is poetry. Such an inspiration.

Killer. Who knew, when "Criminal" came out, that she'd be still around all these years later, sounding better and better all the time? Cheers to you, Ms. Apple! May we enjoy more and more albums from you.
