After Tod left his previous group, Cop Shoot Cop, he quickly regrouped and formed Firewater to explore the styles of music Cop Shoot Cop had only hinted at, including klezmer, cabaret, ska, jazz, and gypsy forms. More than one source described the original Firewater lineup as an "indie rock supergroup", based on members such as Duane Denison of the Jesus Lizard, Yuval Gabay of Soul Coughing, Jennifer Charles of Elysian Fields, and Hahn Rowe. This original lineup proved unable to tour, and Tod recruited new musicians for the band's first tour. While the lineup has changed over the years, with many different musicians appearing on different albums and tours, Tod remains the singer, songwriter, and bassist of Firewater.
Firewater has released six albums, and has seen some success, especially in Europe and on United States college radio stations.
Their previous album, Songs We Should Have Written, is a collection of cover songs. It includes songs written by Robyn Hitchcock, The Rolling Stones ("Paint It Black" reinterpreted as a crawlingly slow raga which "shove(s) a few downers down the song's throat to counter the original version's adrenaline-fueled fire" ), and a "dark and sweet" take of Sonny and Cher's "The Beat Goes On", described as "10 times more ominous and 20 times more pleasurable" than the original. The album also includes a modern rendition of the Johnny Cash anthem "Folsom Prison Blues".
Their latest album, The Golden Hour, has been recorded with various local musicians and friends when Tod A went on sabbatical and travelled through Thailand, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Turkey and Israel. The record was released May 6 in 2008. The band is currently (October, 2008) touring in support of the album.
Get Out of My Head

If I wasn't always broke
And I could be a comedian
If I wasn't such a joke
Guess I knew it all along
Being born's where I went wrong
I always took the medication I was fed
Get out of my head
I could train to be an astronaut
If I weren't afraid of heights
And you know I could be a supermodel
If you turned out all the lights
But all my days are painted grey
And I got nothing much left to say
My ambition is lying underneath the bed
Get out of my head
Get out of my head
Hey all you prestidigitators
Why don't you disappear for good
'Cause Hitler could have been a mediocre painter
Instead of a supercrook
Instead of a supercrook
Maybe I could have a great career
If I could just hold down a job
Or maybe I could be a social butterfly
If I wasn't such a slob
I always wreck everything I got
On every bullet I ever shot
Missed the target 'til I finally hit the red
Get out of my head
Get out of my head...
The song "Get Out of My Head" by Firewater revolves around the singer's failed dreams and aspirations. In the lyrics, the singer reflects on what they could have been if they had made different choices or had different circumstances. They think about being a billionaire, comedian, astronaut, or even a supermodel, but they feel like they never had a chance. They seem to be stuck in a rut of self-pity and disappointment. The singer admits that they always took the medication that they were fed and that they wrecked everything they had due to their inability to focus.
The lyrics also touch on themes of insecurity, fear, and self-doubt. The singer acknowledges that they are a joke and that their ambition lies underneath the bed. They feel like they were born in the wrong place or time, and that mistakes and missed opportunities have limited their potential. The song's chorus, "Get out of my head," is a plea to the thoughts and feelings that are holding the singer back.
Overall, "Get Out of My Head" is a raw and introspective song that touches on the disappointments and frustrations of life. It explores the idea of what could have been and the difficulties of pursuing one's dreams.
