After Tod left his previous group, Cop Shoot Cop, he quickly regrouped and formed Firewater to explore the styles of music Cop Shoot Cop had only hinted at, including klezmer, cabaret, ska, jazz, and gypsy forms. More than one source described the original Firewater lineup as an "indie rock supergroup", based on members such as Duane Denison of the Jesus Lizard, Yuval Gabay of Soul Coughing, Jennifer Charles of Elysian Fields, and Hahn Rowe. This original lineup proved unable to tour, and Tod recruited new musicians for the band's first tour. While the lineup has changed over the years, with many different musicians appearing on different albums and tours, Tod remains the singer, songwriter, and bassist of Firewater.
Firewater has released six albums, and has seen some success, especially in Europe and on United States college radio stations.
Their previous album, Songs We Should Have Written, is a collection of cover songs. It includes songs written by Robyn Hitchcock, The Rolling Stones ("Paint It Black" reinterpreted as a crawlingly slow raga which "shove(s) a few downers down the song's throat to counter the original version's adrenaline-fueled fire" ), and a "dark and sweet" take of Sonny and Cher's "The Beat Goes On", described as "10 times more ominous and 20 times more pleasurable" than the original. The album also includes a modern rendition of the Johnny Cash anthem "Folsom Prison Blues".
Their latest album, The Golden Hour, has been recorded with various local musicians and friends when Tod A went on sabbatical and travelled through Thailand, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Turkey and Israel. The record was released May 6 in 2008. The band is currently (October, 2008) touring in support of the album.
The Vegas Strip
Firewater Lyrics

Oh but the bottle's half empty
And you're stuck
You're stuck between the cup and the lid
When you're runnin' on fumes
And there's still the devil to pay
Maybe its time, to take a little trip
On the strip!
On the strip!
Oh baby you gonna flip
On the strip
The Vegas strip
You say you want a cheap libation
An all expenses paid vacation
Well maybe you and I lady wanna get yourselves fixed
Oh just take a sip
Just take a little sip
You're gonna flip
Shake your hip baby
Oh c'mon the Vegas strip!
Well its a hard act to follow
But you can keep what you can't swallow
Our life can be so pretty
When you're filth rich!
Thank you, thank you very much!
The lyrics in the song "The Vegas Strip" by Firewater provide a glimpse into the struggles of someone who is stuck between two worlds. The first verse describes how the glass may be half full, but the bottle is half empty. This line represents someone who may feel like they have some positive things going for them, but they are also dealing with a lot of issues. They are stuck between the cup and the lid, meaning they are trapped between two different states or conditions.
The second verse talks about running on fumes and also having the devil to pay. This line suggests that the person is feeling exhausted and also dealing with some sort of negative consequence. The chorus hits with an upbeat and catchy tune and suggests taking a trip to the Vegas Strip to let loose and escape from the struggles of everyday life. The Vegas Strip is known for being an exciting and exhilarating destination, and it's clear that the person in the song needs a little break from their current reality.
The final verse talks about how hard it is to follow the Vegas Strip act, but how life can be pretty when you're filthy rich. This line depicts how the lavish lifestyle of Las Vegas can create an illusion of glamour and wealth. Overall, the lyrics in the song provide an escape for someone who may be struggling in their everyday life.
