“…they sound festival-sized, delivering uplifting anthems that would fit as comfortably on the radio as around the campfire” Q Magazine
“…they’ll be pillaging (in a good way) our playlists and camping out on our computers for the foreseeable future” Earmilk
Firewoodisland draw their influences from a number of sources, including artists such as Thomas Dybdahl and Bon Iver, alongside the traditional folk music of Wales and Norway. They describe their own organic sound as Celtic Viking Music.
During the sleepy autumn months of 2010, Viking descendant Stian Vedøy set sail in his longship from Haugesund, Norway, to embark on the shores of Cardiff, South Wales. New lands and legends soon inspired him to begin his journey in a solo project. With humble beginnings in Cardiff’s local club Koko Gorillaz, the music grew in popularity and sound to become a group of dedicated musicians who relish the chance to play together.
Subsequently they toured across the UK and back to Norway, releasing their debut EP ‘ILD’ earlier in 2014. In addition, the band were regional winners of Norway’s Bandwagon battle of the bands, have won Amazing Radio’s weekly Audition twice and headlined the Richer Unsigned showcase in association with Q Magazine. The band released their second EP in Autumn 2015.

Yellow, red and brown, Yellow, red and brown
Nowhere to be find
Timid gentle naked shivers, waiting patient on the queen
To tuck them in, to tuck them in
Hiding what has been
Changing the complexion, it's pilling higher, piling highest
An infinite collection is piling higher, piling silent
Cause underneath the frozen blur
Is home of where the healing occur
A micro-manufactory neither man or beast can hear
Restoring life, restoring life, restoring life
Restoring life, restoring life, the clearing white
The sky is on the ground, earth is turning slow
Glowing city, patterns in the snow
Humankind is rushing, doing what we know
Filling needs, a hoarding overflow
Filling needs, a hoarding overflow
In a splitting of a second it's piling high, piling higher
Changing the complexion, it's pilling higher, piling highest
An infinite collection is piling higher, piling silent
It's underneath the frozen blur
Is home of where the healing occur
A micro-manufactory neither man or beast can hear
Restoring life, restoring life, restoring life
Restoring life, restoring life, the clearing white
Oh oh, winter's coming hold your breath
Oh oh, winter's coming
Oh oh, winter's coming hold your breath
Oh oh, winter's coming
Oh oh, winter's coming hold your breath
Oh oh, winter's coming hold your breath
Oh oh, winter's coming, in the depth darling go to rest
The song "Winter is Coming" by Firewoodisland captures the essence of winter and the changes it brings in the natural world. The opening lines "The trees are getting ready, shaking off their green, Yellow, red and brown, Yellow, red and brown, Nowhere to be find" indicate that the trees are shedding their leaves, and the vivid description of the colors of the leaves changing to yellow, red and brown symbolizes the transition from autumn to winter. The next few lines suggest that the trees are waiting for winter to arrive, the queen being the personification of winter, and the trees are patiently awaiting the arrival of snow to tuck them in and hide what has been.
The chorus "In a splitting of a second it's piling high, piling higher, Changing the complexion, it's piling higher, piling highest, An infinite collection is piling higher, piling silent" describes the sudden onset of snow and the rapid accumulation that takes place. The repeated phrase "piling higher" emphasizes the accumulation of snow, and the use of the word "silent" emphasizes the quietness of the winter landscape. The following lines "Cause underneath the frozen blur Is home of where the healing occur, A micro-manufactory neither man nor beast can hear" suggest that below the surface of the snow, life continues to thrive, even in the extreme conditions of winter. The "micro-manufactory" refers to the natural processes that take place in the soil during winter, which are responsible for restoring life and fertility to the earth.
The final verse, "The sky is on the ground, earth is turning slow, Glowing city, patterns in the snow, Humankind is rushing, doing what we know, Filling needs, a hoarding overflow" contrasts the stillness and beauty of the winter landscape with the hectic pace of modern life. It describes the way in which humans have forgotten the importance of nature and instead focus on filling their needs and hoarding material possessions. The repeated phrase "restoring life" underscores the importance of nature in providing for all our needs, and the closing lines "in the depth darling go to rest" suggest that winter is a time to slow down, reflect and rest.
