Nothing Has to Be True
First Aid Kit Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Each and every breath we take
A step towards death
And the moon is pale
And we might have seen something
But we ain't seen nothing yet

And I may have dreamt it
Or it may have happened
When I stood right here
Waiting for a sign
For me to walk away

But I give in so easy
And I give up instantly
I chase what is gone
And my friends are gettin' tired
Of the shit that I pull

They say, "Why do you love those
Who turn you into a fool?
Why do you let them get to you?
You should have been running
When you chose to stay"

Now I feel so far away
From the person I once was
I thought love was enough
You can tell yourself so many things
And nothing has to be true

Did you wake up last night
Drenched in your own sweat and tears?
No, it's not always easy
You get lost countin' the years
Since you last felt like you were home
Since you last felt like you were home

Since you last felt like you were home
Oh, I thought you were home

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of First Aid Kit's song "Nothing Has to Be True" explore themes of mortality, love, and self-doubt. In the opening lines, the lyrics reflect on the inevitability of death with each breath taking us closer to our end. The pale moon acts as a metaphor for the fleeting nature of life and our limited perspective on the world. The second verse delves into feelings of uncertainty and confusion, with the singer unsure if they are dreaming or if they have experienced something real. The line "waiting for a sign for me to walk away" could refer to a relationship or situation that is causing the singer distress but they are unsure if it's time to end it.

The chorus shifts to the perspectives of the singer's friends, who are getting tired of their behavior. The lyrics suggest that the singer has a pattern of chasing after people or things that are no longer available or may not be good for them. The friends question the singer's loyalty and self-respect, wondering why they continue to pursue those who turn them into a fool. The lyrics convey a sense of disbelief and disappointment with the singer's choices. The final lines indicate a feeling of distance and alienation from oneself, suggesting that the singer has lost a sense of identity and purpose. However, they are also acknowledging that sometimes it is easier to tell ourselves lies rather than face the truth.

I just have to stop in to tell you that this is absolutely beautiful. When I first heard this song, on a TV program, my head snapped up as soon as I heard that wonderfully haunting voice come in. It sent all kinds of emotions running through me. As a musician myself, this one really connected and gave me goosebumps. Well done. This deserves so much more exposure. Bravo and thank you for sharing this. It made my musical world brighter.

@T S Thought there was about to be a feminist argument lol very poignant explanation. People from different countries often don't understand the slang and can be off putting and some are just all about spreading divisivness wanting to enforce their worldview on you if you don't agree with them and use their terms. In either case, you responded perfectly for explaining the use of "guys".

T S

@geoff munn "Guys" can also be used to describe a group or more than one person despite which gender is in the group. For example, a group of people can be 3 boys and 2 girls (or it can even be just girls or just boys) and someone can call out to this group saying "Let's go guys" referring to the whole group and not a specific gender (even a girl will call out to another group of girls this way). I am sure this comment knows that they are girls and I do not think they were being disrespectful in any way. Using guys to refer to a group is slang that many people use (where I am from). There are lots of articles about the topic of calling a group of people "guys" and most of them write about when it is appropriate to use and when it is not. This slang can be confusing.
