Our Own Pretty Ways
First Aid Kit Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Let's not spill the truth
It's easier being alone
You're a shadow of the old
And I want something new

You've quit dreaming again
I can see it now clear
But I'll wake up every morning
With the big black and the blue

Let's take this for what it is
You tell me you have changed
Well we all change in our own ways
In our own pretty ways

La da da da da da
La da da da da da

It all comes down to this
I'm an ocean, you're the rain
The ice is melting fast
But you're not pulling down the brakes

You'll start drinking again
I can see it now clear
How you'll wake up every morning
With a new bird in your cage

Even the most peaceful town
Once was a battle ground
Well we all change in our own ways
In our own pretty ways

Even in our police state
Someone dares to demonstrate
Well we fight in our own ways
But nothing ever change

La da da da da da
La da da da da da

La da da da da da
La da da da da da

Overall Meaning

In First Aid Kit's song Our Own Pretty Ways, the lyrics are filled with complex emotions and an underlying message of self-discovery and the inevitability of change. The song seems to be about a relationship that's coming to an end because one partner has given up on their dreams and the other wants something new. The first verse reveals the fear of telling the truth and instead choosing a more comfortable option of being alone. The second verse touches on the idea of change with the lines "You tell me you have changed, well we all change in our own ways, in our own pretty ways." It's a recognition that change is inevitable, but it doesn't always mean something new and better.

The chorus of the song is where the message becomes clearer. The line "It all comes down to this, I'm an ocean, you're the rain" implies a lack of synchronicity between the two people in the relationship. While the ice is melting fast, meaning there's a chance for renewal, one person is not on the same page, and their actions are pulling the other person down. The final verse seems to imply that change is hard, and while we all fight in our ways, nothing ever changes.

Overall, First Aid Kit's Our Own Pretty Ways is a beautiful song with layers of emotion and meaning that can be interpreted in various ways.

It surprises me everytime that despite their age they have such deep songs. It feels like an 80-year old person wrote these songs and I mean this as a compliment. Love it!!!

Maddy Cali

they each individually have amazing voices but put together, it is phenomenal, i get chills when i hear them sing

Grace Link

Their best performances are the ones they do in the woods like this.

No saben todo lo que me hace recordar esta canción, es increíble, toda mi juventud que la pasé prácticamente solo, quizás yo quería estar solo. Qué bonitos recuerdos y qué linda música.

I'll always love them, I went to their concert back in 2012 and I was so overwhelmed. It was one of my first concerts and afterwards, I met them. They were so nice and I was kinda nervous so I couldn't say much, but I was so grateful I could see them. They harmonize so perfect together, I swear, if you have the chance to see them live - grab that opportunity with both hands. Totally worth it!

Tosca Groenewold they're the sweetest girls ever, really. They took the time and gave every fan attention. It wasn't a big gig though, they weren't that well known back then as they are now. I hope you'll meet them one day! :)

MusicControlsMyLife1 Sounds amazing! I hope so too :)
