First Aid Kit Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Let us be lovers we'll marry our fortunes together
I've got some real estate here in my bag
So we bought a pack of cigarettes and Mrs. Wagner's pies
And we walked off to look for America
Cathy I said as we boarded a Greyhound in Pittsburgh
Michigan seems like a dream to me now
It took me four days to hitchhike from Saginaw
I've gone to look for America
Laughing on the bus playing games with the faces
She said the man in the gabardine suit was a spy
I said be careful his bowtie is really a camera
Toss me a cigarette I think there's one in the raincoat
We smoked the last one an hour ago
So I looked at the scenery she read her magazine
And the moon rose over an open field
Cathy I'm lost I said though I knew she was sleeping
I'm empty and aching and I don't know why
Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike
They've all come to look for America
All come to look for America

All come to look for America
All come to look for America

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of First Aid Kit's "America" evoke the spirit of the beatnik generation with its vivid imagery of two lovers on a quest to find a deeper meaning of life in the land of the free. The first verse, "Let us be lovers we'll marry our fortunes together, I've got some real estate here in my bag," sets the tone of the song as a romantic journey full of possibilities. The couple sets out to find their own version of America, disenchanted with the current state of things, and finds joy in the little things like cigarettes and pies.

The second verse, "Cathy I said as we boarded a Greyhound in Pittsburgh, Michigan seems like a dream to me now. It took me four days to hitchhike from Saginaw, I've gone to look for America," tells the story of the couple's journey on a Greyhound bus from Pittsburgh to Michigan to find something real. They meet interesting characters along the way, play games and share secrets, but there's a sense of longing and confusion underlying their journey.

The final verse, "Cathy I'm lost I said though I knew she was sleeping, I'm empty and aching and I don't know why. Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike, they've all come to look for America," captures the essence of the American dream and how it can be a source of both hope and despair. The couple is lost in the vastness of America, searching for something they can't quite put their finger on, a feeling that many can relate to.

Overall, "America" is a poignant and nostalgic song that captures the sense of longing and disillusionment that many people have felt at some point in their lives.

Paul Simon giving a standing ovation was so cool. These girls are tremendous.

I'm glad he came out of his stupor.

@Steve Elliott - I agree with you on the Monarchy. Purely symbolic now but, the cover by Foxes and Fossils cannot even sit at the table with First Aid Kit. F and F will always be at the naughty kid's table with this song.

@Kenneth Löjdkvist What the hell are you all talking about? Forget who the king is. Instead check out Foxes and Fossils version of America.

@Anthony Salvati You make that sound like modern royalty care whether someone breaks protocol. They (usually) don't. The king likely looked taken aback because he should have stood up first had he known Paul Simon was going to give a standing ovation, so now it looks like he was being impolite. Royal protocol is a minefield. Most modern royalty are more concerned with doing their job correctly than whether or not someone else followed proper protocol. I sincerely doubt the king was annoyed at Paul Simon, I'd wager he was just feeling awkward that he hadn't stood up first because he didn't know Paul Simon was going to.

It's spelled prince.

When you make Paul Simon himself tear up when he's listening to his own song, you know you did well. These ladies sounded gorgeous singing such a gorgeous song.
