5 Years
Fish Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Pushing through the market square
So many mothers sighing
News had just come over
We had five years left to cry in

News guy wept and told us
Earth she was really dying
Cried so much his face was wet
Well, I knew he wasn't lying

I heard telephones, opera house, favorite melodies
I saw boys and toys, electric irons, TVs
My brain felt like a warehouse it had no room to spare
I had to cram so many things to store everything in there

And all the fat, skinny people
And all the tall, short people
And all the nobody people
And all the somebody people
Christ, I never thought I'd need so many people

Girl my age went off her head
She hit some tiny children
And if the black hadn't pulled her off
Then I think I know she would have killed them

I saw a soldier with a broken arm
Staring to the wheels of a Cadillac
A cop knelt and kissed the feet of a priest
And a queer well he threw up at the sight of that

I think I saw you in an ice-cream parlor
Drinking milk shakes cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine
I don't think you knew you were in this song

And it was cold and it rained so I felt like an actor
And I thought of ma and I wanted to get back there
Your face, your ace, the way that you talk
Well, I kiss you, you're beautiful, I want you to walk

We got five years, stuck on my eyes
Five years, what a surprise
Five years, my brain hurts a lot
We got five years, that's all we've got

Five years, that's all we've got
Five years
Five years
Five years

Overall Meaning

The song "Five Years" by Fish, explores the emotions and chaos of humanity upon hearing the news that the Earth has only five years left to live. The song paints a vivid picture of this situation, as it describes people in all walks of life who are reacting to this news. The main emotion conveyed in the song is a sense of despair and helplessness.

The song begins with Fish pushing "through the market square," surrounded by "so many mothers sighing." The next few lines reveal the cause of their lament. "News had just come over/ We had five years left to cry in." These lyrics suggest that people are already grieving for the loss of the planet, even before it has happened.

The song also describes the news guy weeping and telling people that the Earth is dying. The line "Well, I knew he wasn't lying" is significant because it shows that the truth of the news is undeniable. Fish then lists things that he saw and heard as a consequence of this news, such as "telephones, opera house, favorite melodies," "boys and toys, electric irons, TVs." The line "My brain felt like a warehouse, it had no room to spare" shows the chaos and confusion that people are feeling.

The second verse of the song tells the story of the girl who has gone insane and almost killed some children. It also confronts people's prejudices as expressed in the line "A queer, well he threw up at the sight of that." The third verse is a more personal reflection on Fish's own experience in this new world where Earth has only five years remaining.

Overall, the song is a poignant warning about the fragility of life and the necessity of preserving the environment before it's too late. Fish manages to convey the palpable sense of panic and confusion that people would feel in this scenario.

Incredible cover. We miss you David :(

Sam Brooks

As a lifelong bowie fan I can only say damn fine job mate.

Rat Splatigan

Super tasty sweet cover of a truly classic rock song. Love the sound of that fretless bass.

Matt Maloney

He certainly does something quite different with it, it's more of a bluesy, almost gospel take on it with the guitar and the choir at the end. One of the more successful efforts from his covers album "Songs from the Mirror".

Alan Scott

I'm ashamed to say that I didn't even know it a bowie track, but heard it first on Songs from the Mirror... Fish did a cracking job on this one..

Matt Maloney

Nothing to be ashamed of there, it's not really one of Bowie's best known songs to the general public as it wasn't one of his many hit singles. It was an album track on Ziggy Stardust. It doesn't tend to appear on his compilations either. It says a lot for Fish that he didn't choose an obvious Bowie hit to cover like Space Oddity or Starman that everyone knows.

Alan Scott

Ha ha

Matt Maloney

What's funny, is it the thought of Fish doing Starman?

69stepe

I liked them both equally, but Fish did a really great job on that one ;))

Queenesy

great cover! Fish did a nice job with this Bowie's song ;-)
