Credo
Fish Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I watch the TV every night;
I stay awake by satellite.
I hope and pray the nightmares
Stay away today.

An oily shroud on a coral reef,
A black cloud's hanging over me.
When I hit on the remote,
The programs stay the same.
Credo, credo, credo, credo.

An assegai slick with sweat and blood.
A shotgun barks at a rabid dog.
A shallow grave hugs a highway,
Beneath a bleaching sun.

[Chorus]
Credo, credo, credo, credo.
It don't mean nothin'; it don`t mean nothin'
It don't mean nothin'; it don`t mean nothin' to me.

When cancer sucks a young girl's breast.
When a company chains a young man's soul.
When the coal dust stole,
My grandad's breath away.

[Chorus]

A tattered tramp tacks a windy wind,
To close a crowded circle, a brazier's light.
A man becomes a mountain, in the falling snow.
A mother screams and a baby cries.
The memory gone before the blood has dried.
A needle pricks the conscience,
To help it fade away.

[Chorus]

The more you scream, the less you hear,
Or that`s how it used to be.
But I just can't tell the difference
Anymore these days.
The open lips of an altar boy.
A planet spins in a silent void.
The options are ever fewer,
On the ground these days.

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The song "Credo" by Fish talks about the continuous violence, pain, and suffering that we are forced to witness every day on TV, news channels, and newspapers. The song seems to address the hopeless situation that we face, where we are irreversibly damaged by watching the graphic and horrifying news about wars, violence, and hatred. The lyrics go on talking about the destruction of the environment and the impending doom of the planet. The lyrics then address the viewers, who are glued to the TV, watching the same programming with no change, and are desensitized to the atrocities of the world.

Fish implies that we have lost faith in everything because of the endless torment visible on our screens. The chorus "It don't mean nothing to me" reinforces the idea that we're witnessing the same scenes repeatedly, and they've lost their significance as we have grown apathetic. Fish insists that the more we scream, the less we hear, suggesting that our desperation and cries are falling on deaf ears. With the imagery of the open lips of an altar boy, Fish highlights the corruption and scandals that continue to a rise around us.

How the hell did this single stall at only no 37 in the charts? This song is massive. Easy top ten hit. The record company must have done a piss poor job in promoting it.

An absolutely awesome all time great rock song. If Fish had only ever written this he would be remembered by people with aural taste. This is passion, soul, sadness, anger and power at its very best. The players here are awesome, the production superb and the singer's sentiment grabs you at the core. Brilliant lyrics in a legendary tune. I've run out of superlatives. Young writers could learn a fair bit from this guy.
