Fishbone first assembled with John Norwood Fisher (bass), his brother Philip "Fish" Fisher (drums), Angelo Moore (vocals, saxophones and theremin), Kendall Jones (guitar), "Dirty" Walter A. Kibby II (vocals, trumpet), and Christopher Dowd (keyboards, trombone, vocals). They achieved their greatest success in the late 1980s and early 1990s, after which they went through many personnel changes. From 2003 to 2010, John Norwood Fisher and Angelo Moore were the last remaining original members of the band. In the 2010s, all the other original members except Kendall Jones rejoined the band for various reunions and anniversary activities.
Sunless Saturday

I see the dung heaps piled at least a mile high
I see the shards of shattered dreams in the street
I face the morning with my customary sigh
I hear the sounds of children laughing aloud
A stumbling wind has attracted quite a crowd
My breakfast finished now i brave the outside
Chase these clouds away
I hate this sunless Saturday
Freedom come
For us now
Light our sky
Burn away these clouds
Perhaps the charcoal grey and brown around me
Is just the mirror image of tainted soul
I think the sun will never visit my sky
Until the truth is seen by each and every eye
I see the helpless and i see the insane
I see a pauper singing in the pouring rain
I see the means of help elude us again
I think the sun will never visit me again
The Fishbone song "Sunless Saturday" is a poignant commentary on the state of society and how it affects the individual. The opening lines describe the filth and decay that surrounds the singer, from the physical debris outside their window to the shattered dreams in the street. The line "I face the morning with my customary sigh" suggests a sense of hopelessness and resignation, as if the weight of the world and its problems are too much to bear.
However, amidst the bleakness, there is a glimmer of hope in the sound of children laughing, reminding the singer of the innocence and possibility of youth. The lyrics then shift to a desire for change, for freedom to come and light to burn away the clouds. The imagery of charcoal grey and brown as a reflection of a "tainted soul" suggests that the problems depicted in the song may be rooted in something deeper than just physical decay. The final lines express a feeling of helplessness as the means of help elude us and the sun may never visit again until the truth is seen by all.
Overall, "Sunless Saturday" is a commentary on the state of society and how it affects individuals, highlighting both the hopelessness and the potential for change. It encourages a deeper understanding of the root causes of societal problems and a sense of responsibility in bringing about change.

still gives me goosebumps after all these years... Those harmonies, Norwood's bass playing, Angelo's singing, the heaviness of the guitars, it all blends so niceely and still sounds so fresh today
