Red
Fisher Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lover, I was driving down the interstate today
Saw a little old red maple up by highway 28
But the sycamores were taller and bigger at the waist
And a billboard selling something cast a shadow on her face
And I drove on

When winter laid her frozen hand on Middletown last year
All the countryside was burdened by the weight of heaven's tears
That old maple was bent over like some ancient pharoah's slave
Though the ice is long forgotten, there's just something about the weight she can't forget

Lover, there's a couple things of which I am afraid
Of being washed out in your shadow or bent beneath your weight

But the thing I'm most afraid of is everbody's gaze
That they'd give me their attention for a couple years or days and then drive on and forget

Overall Meaning

Fisher's "Red" is an introspective ballad about the nature of growth and self-worth. The song opens with the singer driving down the interstate, where they see a little old red maple on the side of the road. However, they note that the sycamores nearby are taller and more imposing. Additionally, the maple is cast in shadow by a billboard. Despite this, the singer drives on without stopping. The use of the tree as a metaphor for the singer's own self-worth is an important theme throughout the song.

The second verse of "Red" finds the singer reflecting on the past winter. The countryside was burdened by snow and ice, and the old maple was bent over and struggling to weather the storm. The singer notes that the ice may have long since melted, but the tree's struggle to bear the weight remains. This idea of carrying emotional burdens even after the initial pain has passed is another key theme in the song.

The final verse sees the singer confessing their fears to their lover. They are afraid of being overshadowed or overwhelmed, but mostly they fear being forgotten. Their anxiety about not being remembered echoes the tree's placement in the shadow of the billboard. The song concludes with a sense of unresolved tension, with the singer's fear of being forgotten still in the forefront of their mind.

Overall, "Red" is a powerful meditation on feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and the quest for self-worth. The lyrics make excellent use of metaphor and imagery, allowing the listener to connect with the song's themes on a deep emotional level.

It is truly too bad that we can't see any more of the reruns of this show and a big Canadian shame on those responsible for taking away our childhood memories!!!

That's because CFTO would tape over their archives. So fucking cheap! That's why we only have a few clips of the Uncle Bobby show.

My 30 yr old daughter left 'Poems of Our Great Outdoors' behind for me to browse. She picked it up from a village book box. Boy did it bring back memories of my youth. Red Fisher's poetry is still relevant today. Thanks for sharing this memory .

Red Fisher ... talks a mile a minute and his wife could never do more than nod her head in agreement.

Red's show ran for so many years! Any idea what the music is that's used for the program theme?

Sad, but true: He was my grandmother's youngest brother, but I only met him a handful of times. He would do winters in Florida and would stop to visit my grandmother in Columbus, OH going to and from Ontario.
