La despedida
Fito Páez Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Algo se detuvo en punto muerto
Y fue tan grande ese silencio
Fue tan grande el desamor
Restos de un navío que encallaba
Yo te quise, yo te amaba
No se bien lo qué pasó

Cuando los jazmines no perfuman
Cuando sólo vemos bruma
Cuando el cuento terminó

Todo nos parece intranscendente
No es cuestión de edad o suerte
De esto se trata el amor

Tengo que correr
Tienes que correr
A toda velocidad
A toda velocidad

Veo tus pupilas descubriendo algún Chagall
En el invierno, creo del '83
Yo estoy a tu lado revolviendo
Ordenando libros viejos

A toda velocidad
A toda velocidad

Sabe amargo el licor de las cosas queridas
Se acabó lo mejor, ¿quién nos quita esta herida?
Tú me pierdes a mí, yo te doy por perdida
Es la hora de huir, la despedida
Uh-uh
La despedida

Tengo que correr
Tienes que correr

A toda velocidad
A toda velocidad

Overall Meaning

The song "La despedida" by Fito Paez talks about the end of a love story. The first verse talks about how something stopped in a deadlock, and the silence and lack of love were so great that it was like the remains of a stranded ship. The singer loved and still loves the person he is talking about, but he does not understand what happened to make the relationship collapse. The next verse describes how everything seems meaningless when love is gone, and it doesn't matter if you're young or old, lucky or not. Love is the theme of the song, and it has a power so great that it can make you run as fast as you can.

The tone of the song is very nostalgic, and the biblical metaphor of a shipwreck adds to the sadness of the song. The jasmines, which are usually associated with love and romance, are not perfuming, and everything seems foggy and pointless without love. The bridge of the song talks about memories and how they are both sweet and bitter at the same time. The singer remembers a winter in 1983 when he was with the loved one, discovering a Chagall painting, and ordering old books they had read but forgotten. The memory of the mother's kisses on the phone and the sound of her smile illuminate the kitchen and the studio.

In the last part of the song, the singer describes the end of the love story in a very poetic and beautiful way. The liquor of loved things tastes bitter, and the best has ended, and there is no way to fix this wound. They are losing each other, and it is time to say goodbye and leave. These lines are very poetic and powerful, and they capture the intensity of love and the pain of its end.
