The group's debut EP, Songs for a Breakup, Vol. 1, was released in 2009. Dangerbird Records signed the group in 2010 and issued their first full-length album, Pickin' Up the Pieces, in August of that year. The album reached #15 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Los Angeles Times music critic Ann Powers wrote, "Fitz & the Tantrums is the kind of band that communicates best in concert, but this album serves as a fine proxy and party-starter." Aly Comingore of the Santa Barbara Independent wrote that the band members craft "soulful, nostalgia pop that's not only infectious, but just fresh enough to make it stand apart from its predecessors."
In 2010 the group opened several dates on tour with Maroon 5. On January 12, 2011, Fitz & the Tantrums performed the songs "MoneyGrabber" and "Don't Gotta Work It Out" on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live in Los Angeles. In 2010 the groups music video for the song "MoneyGrabber" was incorporated into the opening scene of a sixth season episode of the CBS crime-drama Criminal Minds entitled "Safe Haven".
Fitzpatrick has said that the band's musical style can be fairly described as "soul-influenced indie pop". He noted that while the band is influenced by the classic songs of the Motown and Stax record labels, the band is not trying to create an exact replica of that music. In another interview, Fitzpatrick talked about his decision to not use guitars in the band. "I did want to try and make a big sounding record without guitars," he said. "For me, I just feel like in any music that has a band, the guitar is always there, it's always featured, it's always prevalent. I'm just sick of hearing it."
In 2012, the band signed to Elektra Records, and started to record their major-label debut More Than Just A Dream, which will be released on May 7, 2013.
Last Raindrop
Fitz and the Tantrums Lyrics

In between the world I don’t have with you
Here in all the miles that we used to share
My heart is still there
If you found some other love than me
It would tear this one completely
Will you still need me?
[Chorus]
Now that winter’s falling
All of the color’s gone
When the summer stops
With the beat of my heart, my heart
Days pass by
Fade all the clouds apart
Last raindrop
With the beat of my heart, my heart
Strike away the fears hidden ‘round in me
They’re eating up the truth of our memory
Keep in mind the words so they don’t give way
That’s what we both say
If you found some other love than me
It would tear this one completely
Will you still need me?
How will we carry on…and on and on
[Chorus: x2]
Now that winter’s falling
All of the color’s gone
When the summer stops
With the beat of my heart, my heart
Days pass by
Fade all the clouds apart
Last raindrop
With the beat of my heart, my heart
All I really want is for you to say
Somehow, someway
That you’ll never give up and slip away
[Chorus: x2]
Now that winter’s falling
All of the color’s gone
When the summer stops
With the beat of my heart, my heart
Days pass by
Fade all the clouds apart
Last raindrop
With the beat of my heart, my heart
The lyrics of Fitz and the Tantrums' song Last Raindrop seem to speak of enduring love despite distance and possible separation. The opening lines suggest the passing of time and how it affects being distanced from someone special. The line “Here in all the miles that we used to share, my heart is still there” shows how the memories of the past still resonate in the present, and how the feelings associated with them continue to exist. The chorus talks about the passing of seasons, which can either bring about joy or heartbreak. The line “When the summer stops, with the beat of my heart, my heart” depicts how love can stop abruptly and unexpectedly, but the heart still keeps beating.
The next verses speak of the singer's vulnerability and the fear of losing someone they love. It appears that they are trying to keep a positive outlook, but the line "Strike away the fears hidden ‘round in me, They’re eating up the truth of our memory" reveals a sense of anxiety and desperation. Despite this, the singer remains hopeful that their love will persevere. The line “All I really want is for you to say, Somehow, someway that you’ll never give up and slip away” shows how they want assurance from their loved one that nothing will come between them.
In summary, Fitz and the Tantrums' Last Raindrop is a song that expresses the complicated emotions that come with love, distance, and possible separation. The lyrics touch on themes such as nostalgia, hope, vulnerability, and the inevitable passing of time.
