Stormy Weather
Fitzgerald (Ella) Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Since my man and I ain't together, keeps raining all the time
Life is bare, gloom and misery everywhere, stormy weather
Just can't get my poor self together
I'm weary, the time, the time
So weary all the time
When he went away the blues walked in and met me
All I do is pray the Lord above will let me
Walk in the sun once more
Can't go on, everything I had is gone, stormy weather
Since my man and I ain't together
Keeps raining all the time
Keeps raining all the time
I walk around, heavy-hearted and sad
Night comes around, I'm still feelin' bad
Rain pourin' down and blindin' every hope I had
This pitterin', patterin', beatin' and spatterin' drive me mad
Love, love, love, love
This misery will be the end of me
When he went away the blues walked in and met me
If he stays away, that old rocking chair will get me
All I do is pray the Lord above will let me
Walk in the sun once more
Can't go on, everything I had is gone, stormy weather
Since my man and I ain't together
Keeps raining all the time
The time
Keeps raining all the time
The song "Stormy Weather" by Fitzgerald (Ella) is a classic lament about a woman's heartbreak and despair during a difficult time. The opening line "Don't know why there's no sun up in the sky, stormy weather" sets the tone for the mood of this melancholic song. The singer is experiencing extreme distress with her love life, and the absence of her partner has left her feeling hopeless and full of despair. The rains and gloomy weather serve as a metaphor for the singer's state of mind, which is constantly clouded and darkened by her pain.
The second verse of "Stormy Weather" expresses the woman's feelings of loneliness and isolation. She is now alone and cannot seem to find any joy in life. She is consumed by thoughts of her ex-partner, and each passing day without him only increases her pain. The chorus repeats the line "Since my man and I ain't together, keeps raining all the time," which reinforces the singer's feelings of loss and sadness. She is unable to move on and cannot see any hope for the future.

Don't know why
There's no sun up in the sky
Stormy weather
Since my man and I ain't together
Keeps rainin' all the time
Life is bare gloom and misery
Everywhere,
Stormy weather
Just can't get my poor self together
I'm weary all the time
The time,
So weary all the time
When he went away
The blues walked in and met me
If he stays a way old rockin' chair will get me
All I do is pray the Lord above will let me
Walk in the sun once more,
Can't go on, everything is gone
Stormy weather
Since my man and I ain't together
Keeps rainin' all the time
Keeps rainin' all the time
Don't know time.

I agree 100%. But you can say that about almost every song that Ella recorded. She was matchless.
I was fortunate to be able to see her in London in the early 60's. I enjoyed the concert but I wasna mature enough then to appreciate her artistry as I do now. Still.it was a great experience that can never be repeated.

Ella never did a bad song, I swear!
That being said, Etta James gives you a kick in the stomach with the raw emotion she puts in this song. Etta does my favorite version

To be fair, every song Ella ever sang was the best version of that song.
