The band originally consisted of vocalist and keyboardist Ivan Moody, rhythm guitarist Zoltan Bathory, lead guitarist Caleb Andrew Bingham, bassist Matt Snell, and drummer Jeremy Spencer. Bingham was replaced by guitarist Darrell Roberts in 2006, who was then replaced by Jason Hook in 2009. Bassist Matt Snell departed from the band in 2010, and was replaced by Chris Kael in 2011. Spencer then departed the band in 2018 due to recurring back issues, and was replaced by Charlie Engen, making rhythm guitarist Bathory the only remaining founding member of the band. In October 2020, British guitarist Andy James became the band's lead guitarist, replacing Jason Hook.

My Own Hell

Do the voices ever stop
My thoughts speak louder the more I resist
And they're driving me insane
Do they ever go
Inside I'm a danger to myself
I'm a danger to myself
My own hell
Losing the battle I've waged on myself
Lock me up and toss the key
Toys in the attic its all getting worse
Why wont they let me be oh god make it stop
Inside I'm a danger to myself
I'm a danger to myself
Inside I'm a prisoner of my own hell
My own hell
Fit me for a straitjacket
Put me in a padded cell
I'm a danger to you all
And I'm a danger to myself
Inside I'm a danger to myself
I'm a danger to myself
Inside I'm a prisoner of my own hell
My own hell
Inside I'm a danger to myself
I'm a danger to myself
Inside I'm a prisoner of my own hell
My own hell
The lyrics to Five Finger Death Punch's "My Own Hell" describe a person who is struggling with their own thoughts and voices in their mind, feeling like they are losing control and becoming a danger to themselves and those around them. The repetition of the line "I'm a danger to myself" emphasizes their fear and desperation for help, while also showing their awareness of the harm they could cause. They feel trapped in their own mind, unable to escape the turmoil that is causing them to spiral out of control.
The lines "Fit me for a straitjacket, Put me in a padded cell" highlight the extreme measures that the person feels may be necessary to prevent harm, as if they cannot trust themselves to make rational decisions. The song ends with the repetition of the phrase "My Own Hell," emphasizing the personal nature of their struggle and the feeling of being trapped in their own torment.
Overall, "My Own Hell" provides a poignant look into the mind of someone struggling with mental illness and the importance of seeking help when feeling overwhelmed.
