Five Iron Frenzy started as a local side-project of Reese, Keith, Micah, and Scott's band Exhumator. Although the original intent was for the band to stay local and help support the local music scene, Five Iron Frenzy (FIF, or Five Iron) signed to Frank Tate's 5 Minute Walk records in 1995 and was touring nationally within a year. They reached the peak of their fame around 2000, with the release of All The Hype That Money Can Buy. They were known for dressing up in wacky costumes and fundraising for social causes. In December 2002, they announced that they would be breaking up after a final tour. They played the final show of the tour on November 22, 2003 at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver, which was recorded for The End Is Here (disc 2) (this disc features that show in its entirety and was sold with the band's album, The End is Near). This show had an attendance of over 4,000 people.
On November 22, 2011, they announced via social media outlets and a week-long online scavenger hunt that they were recording a new album. The entire project was crowd funded in under an hour and met with a reunion show and touring. The results of the endeavor, Engine of a Million Plots, was released on November 26th, 2013. All members of the 2003 lineup participated in the project, with the exception of bassist Keith Hoerig, who was replaced by original guitarist Scott Kerr (who had left the band in 1998).
A New Hope
Five Iron Frenzy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Elation, jubilation streams from her face.
Did the halls smell of gunpowder still?
What made the human mind dark enough to kill?
A new hope,
Where is your freedom?
A new hope,
A darker world lies behind this one.
Cryptic it hides beneath perception.
We all saw it on that day,
Stunned we stood stuttering.
What did the news say?
A new hope,
Where is your freedom?
A new hope,
Cast off your burdens.
A new hope,
Where is your freedom?
A new hope,
Here is your freedom.
Peace
Fills us
By hope we steer
Our dark hearts salvaged.
We live without fear.
The lyrics of Five Iron Frenzy's A New Hope speaks to the theme of hope and freedom in the aftermath of tragedy. In the first verse, the singer sings about Amy, who is going back to school after a devastating event. The elation and jubilation on her face suggest that she has found a reason to hope despite the traumatic experience. The singer then reflects on the event that happened, wondering what could have made the human mind dark enough to kill. The chorus then repeats the phrase "A new hope" with the message to cast off burdens and find freedom.
In the second verse, the singer suggests that there is a darker world beyond our perception. The tragic event that happened has exposed the cryptic nature of the world and left people stunned and stuttering. The chorus then repeats again, with an added line that says "Here is your freedom", suggesting that hope and freedom can be found amidst the darkness.
The song ends on a note of peace, with the idea that by hope, we can steer our way out of the darkness. Our "dark hearts" can be salvaged, and we can live without fear. Overall, the lyrics paint a picture of finding hope and freedom in the midst of tragedy, suggesting that there is always a way out of darkness.
