Five Iron Frenzy started as a local side-project of Reese, Keith, Micah, and Scott's band Exhumator. Although the original intent was for the band to stay local and help support the local music scene, Five Iron Frenzy (FIF, or Five Iron) signed to Frank Tate's 5 Minute Walk records in 1995 and was touring nationally within a year. They reached the peak of their fame around 2000, with the release of All The Hype That Money Can Buy. They were known for dressing up in wacky costumes and fundraising for social causes. In December 2002, they announced that they would be breaking up after a final tour. They played the final show of the tour on November 22, 2003 at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver, which was recorded for The End Is Here (disc 2) (this disc features that show in its entirety and was sold with the band's album, The End is Near). This show had an attendance of over 4,000 people.
On November 22, 2011, they announced via social media outlets and a week-long online scavenger hunt that they were recording a new album. The entire project was crowd funded in under an hour and met with a reunion show and touring. The results of the endeavor, Engine of a Million Plots, was released on November 26th, 2013. All members of the 2003 lineup participated in the project, with the exception of bassist Keith Hoerig, who was replaced by original guitarist Scott Kerr (who had left the band in 1998).

The first stanza of Five Iron Frenzy's song Every New Day is about the innocence of childhood and the freedom that comes along with it. A small trick of light could catch the eye of a child and make them feel like they could fly. They believed in what they hoped for - things that were unseen - and felt like they had wings that could carry them anywhere. However, as time passes, people lose that feeling of freedom and the ability to fly. They become shackled by the struggles of life and are no longer able to take a leap of faith. The hope and dreams they once had for the future disappear and they start to feel empty.
The second stanza talks about the vastness of space and the creation of the world. It tells of how small humans are in the grand scheme of things and that they were created by a higher power. Man versus man, man versus machine, and man versus the world, are all struggles that they go through in life. The burdens that pile up on their backs become so heavy that it is hard to breathe and it becomes difficult to take the next step in life. All they yearn for is grace and peace, and they pray for God to increase their strength.
The chorus talks about how the healing hands of God can have mercy on unclean souls and Jesus Christ, the light of the world, can burn bright within their hearts forever. The song ends with a statement about freedom and how it means love without condition. People can offer their hearts to God and let Him make every new day seem so new.

Right now it's March 17, 2020. Covid is starting to get scary and the world is starting to look like a very different place, one that is honestly worrisome.
But I remember this song from when I was a little boy and it still hits me like it did all those years ago. It's a reminder to keep hope, and that everything just might be ok.
