The Riddle
Five for Fighting Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There was a man back in '95
Whose heart ran out of summers
But before he died, I asked him
Wait, what's the sense in life?
Come over me, come over me

He said
Son, why you gotta sing that tune?
Catch a Dylan song or some eclipse of the moon
Let an angel swing and make you swoon
Then you will see, you will see

Then he said
Here's a riddle for you
Find the answer
There's a reason for the world
You and I

Picked up my kid from school today
Did you learn anything 'causin' the world today
You can't live in a castle far away
Now talk to me, come talk to me

He said
Dad, I'm big, but we're smaller than small
In the scheme of things, well, we're nothing at all
Still every mother's child sings a lonely song
So play with me, come play with me

And, hey, dad
Here's a riddle for you
Find the answer
There's a reason for the world
You and I

I said
Son, for all I've told you
When you get right down to the
Reason for the world
Who am I?

There are secrets that we still have left to find
There have been mysteries from the beginning of time
There are answers we're not wise enough to see

He said
You looking for a clue
I love you free

The batter swings and the summer flies
As I look into my angel's eyes
A song plays on while the moon is high over me
Something comes over me

I guess we're big, and I guess we're small
If you think about it, man, you know we got it all
'Cause we're all we got on this bouncing ball
And I love you free
I love you freely

Here's a riddle for you
Find the answer

There's a reason for the world
You and I

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Five for Fighting's "The Riddle" begin with the singer recounting a conversation he had with a dying man in 1995 who asked him about the meaning of life. The man advises him to listen to music, get lost in the beauty of nature, and embrace life. The dying man then challenges the singer with a riddle that asks him to find a reason for the world, and the answer is "you and I." The singer then picks up his son from school and they discuss the relative smallness of humanity, despite everyone's individual importance. The father then questions his own understanding of the world and asks who he is in the grand scheme of things. The son responds that there are still mysteries to uncover and love to share.

The song is about finding meaning and purpose in life. The dying man urges the singer to find joy and beauty in the world - to find the answers to life's riddles through personal experience and appreciation of life's simple pleasures. The singer then passes that wisdom on to his son, encouraging him to take part in life and find joy in the present moment. It's ultimately a message about the importance of connection - connecting with the people around us, with the beauty of the natural world, and with the mysteries of the universe.

This was my dad’s favorite singer and everytime he picked me up from school he’d play this song. Today marks 2 years since he’s been gone. I love you freely dad.

I am very sorry. I can't even imagine without tearing up and really ugly crying . I know this time will come and I would give both legs, a kidney, half a lung to get 6 mote month since we have been cut off because of Covid. If i visit I have panic attacks because I might bring something from the City. If I don't I fell like time is running through my fingers and how cruel and sick I was ( and sick I am still - chronic anorexia doesn't ever leave you even more if it's just a symptom of something much bigger.....I wish I could erase me and give them the child they deserve.

This guy has lived what he writes and sings about. That's what makes his words powerful. it took him 20 years of work before he made any living from his craft. Greatness and sensitivity come out of suffering.

This guy is such a talented singer/songwriter.  This is just pure craft.  Thank you!  I play piano and write songs and I wrote a musical.  This guy, however, is just so talented.  And what a voice, too.  Thank you for sharing your gift with the world.  It is appreciated.  you are appreciated. :)

I am so grateful to know there are other people who also appreciate the greatness in this man's songwriting and singing. He should be under contract with a major label and release a new cd every year for the next 100 years. There are so few pop artists these days who truly deserve to be there. I remember playing his first 2 cassette tapes in my car constantly in the early 2000's and every time was like a religious experience.
