Leonardo " Flaco" Jiménez began performing, at the age of seven, with his father, Santiago Jimenez, who was a pioneer of conjunto music and began recording at age fifteen as a member of Los Caporales. He played in the San Antonio area for several years, and then began working with Douglas Sahm in the 1960s. Sahm, better known as the founding member of the Sir Douglas Quintet, played with Jiménez for some time. Flaco then went on to New York City and worked with Dr. John, David Lindley, Peter Rowan, Ry Cooder and Bob Dylan. He appeared on Cooder's world music album Chicken Skin Music and on the Rolling Stones' Voodoo Lounge. This led to greater awareness of his music outside America and, after touring Europe with Ry Cooder, he returned to tour in America with his own band, and on a joint bill with Peter Rowan. Jiménez, Peter Rowan and Wally Drogos were the original members of a band called The Free Mexican Airforce.
Jiménez won a Grammy Award in 1986 for Ay Te Dejo en San Antonio, one of his father's songs. He was also a member of the Tejano fusion group Texas Tornados, with Augie Meyers, Doug Sahm and Freddy Fender. The Texas Tornados won a Grammy Award in 1990, and Jiménez earned one on his own in 1996, when his self-titled album Flaco Jiménez won the Grammy Award for Best Mexican-American Performance. In 1999, Flaco earned another Grammy Award for Best Tejano Performance for Said and Done (released by Barbed Wire Records), and one for Best Mexican-American Performance as a part of supergroup Los Super Seven. Jiménez has also won a Best Video award at the Tejano Music Awards and earned a Lifetime Achievement Award from Billboard Latin Magazine for "Streets of Bakersfield" with Dwight Yoakam and Buck Owens.
Jiménez appeared in the movie Picking Up the Pieces, with Woody Allen and Sharon Stone, and also featured on the soundtrack. His music has featured in the soundtrack for other movies such as Y Tu Mamá También, The Border, Tin Cup, and Striptease. The Hohner company collaborated with Jiménez to create the Flaco Jimenez Signature Series of accordions.
His brother, Santiago Jiménez, Jr., is also an accomplished accordionist who has recorded extensively.
Jiménez's latest CD, Ya Volvi De La Guerra, was issued in 2009 by Fiesta Records.

Me dicen que he de morir
Mentiras no me hacen nada
Si ella me quiere seguir
A mi no me espanta el sueño
Si me quieren asustar
No la consoló su dueño
Por que la quise y la quiero
Y no la podre olvidar
Su marido anda diciendo
Que a traición me va a matar
Para quitarle su intento
Yo me la voy a llevar
A pasar la temporada
Y después se la vuelvo a traer
Prometido
No mas tantito
Venga negra consentida
Recelo no tengo yo
Si yo he perder la vida
Dispuesto dios lo tendrá
De suerte a los dos nos toca
Pues tan solo en mi querer
Tu marido ya no sopla
Tu vas a ser mi mujer
El cuervo con tantas plumas
No se pudo mantener
Y yo que ni plumas tengo
Tengo querida y mujer
Por una mujer casada
Me dicen que he de morir
Mentiras no me hacen nada
Si ella me quiere seguir
The lyrics to Flaco Jimenez's song "Por una mujer casada" describe a man who is willing to face any consequences if it means he can be with the woman he loves, even if she is married. He declares that lies and threats of death don't scare him as long as she wants to be with him. He claims that he is not afraid of sleep, and if someone wants to scare him, it won't work. He also affirms that he will comfort her when her husband can't.
The man expresses that he has loved and will always love this woman, even though her husband threatens to kill him. To prevent this from happening, he plans to take her away for a while and then bring her back because she is his promised lover. He tells her not to worry, as they are both willing to risk their lives to be together. In the end, he compares himself to a bird without many feathers who still manages to have a wife and lover.
Overall, the song is about a dangerous love affair that breaks societal norms and challenges the idea of loyalty in marriage.

Por una mujer casada
I am willing to risk my life for a married woman
Me dicen que he de morir
People warn me of the danger I am in
Mentiras no me hacen nada
Their lies do not scare me
Si ella me quiere seguir
As long as she loves me and wants to be with me
A mi no me espanta el sueño
I am not afraid of death in my sleep
Si me quieren asustar
Even if they try to frighten me
No la consoló su dueño
Her husband cannot provide her with comfort
Yo la vengo a consolar
I am here to provide her with what she needs
Por que la quise y la quiero
I love her and I will never forget her
Y no la podre olvidar
I cannot forget her
Su marido anda diciendo
Her husband is threatening to kill me
Que a traición me va a matar
He plans to kill me without warning
Para quitarle su intento
To prevent him from carrying out his plan
Yo me la voy a llevar
I will take her away with me
A pasar la temporada
We will spend some time together
Y después se la vuelvo a traer
Then I will bring her back
Prometido
I promise
No mas tantito
Just a little more
Venga negra consentida
Come here, my beloved
Recelo no tengo yo
I am not suspicious
Si yo he perder la vida
Even if I have to sacrifice my life
Dispuesto dios lo tendrá
God will decide
De suerte a los dos nos toca
We are both taking a chance
Pues tan solo en mi querer
Because of my love for her
Tu marido ya no sopla
Her husband will not be a problem anymore
Tu vas a ser mi mujer
She will be my wife
El cuervo con tantas plumas
Even a bird with many feathers
No se pudo mantener
Cannot always keep them all
Y yo que ni plumas tengo
But even though I have nothing
Tengo querida y mujer
I have my beloved woman
