Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
Flaming Lips (Featuring Miley Cyrus & Moby) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Picture yourself in a boat on a river
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly
The girl with kaleidoscope eyes

Cellophane flowers of yellow and green
Towering over your head
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes
And she's (Gone)

Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds, ah

Followed her down to a bridge by a fountain
Where rocking horse people eat marshmallow pies
Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers
That grow so incredibly high

Newspaper taxis appear on the shore
Waiting to take you away
Climb in the back with your head in the clouds
And you're (Gone)

Lucy in the sky with diamonds (Lucy in the sky)
Lucy in the sky with diamonds (Lucy in the sky)
Lucy in the sky with diamonds (Lucy in the sky) ah

Picture yourself on a train in a station
With plasticine porters with looking glass ties
Suddenly someone is there at the turnstile
The girl with kaleidoscope (Eyes)

Lucy in the sky with diamonds (Lucy in the sky)
Lucy in the sky with diamonds (Lucy in the sky)
Lucy in the sky with diamonds (Lucy in the sky) ah
Lucy in the sky with diamonds (Lucy in the sky)

Lucy in the sky with diamonds (Lucy in the sky)
Lucy in the sky with diamonds (Lucy in the sky) ah

Overall Meaning

“Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” is a song by The Beatles, which was released in 1967. The Flaming Lips' rendition featuring Miley Cyrus and Moby is a cover of the original, with a slightly different interpretation. The song creates a vivid, surrealistic imagery of Lucy, who has kaleidoscope eyes and takes the listener on a journey through a world of imaginative landscapes, colorful skies, and trippy characters. The song’s lyrics are filled with references to Alice in Wonderland, which is evident in the imagery of characters such as cellophane flowers, rocking horse people, and newspaper taxis along with the stream of consciousness style of the lyrics.

The song speaks to the power of imagination to transport us from the mundane world to a magical one. It also highlights the ways in which art and creativity allow us to transcend our physical limits and explore the depths of our own minds. Lucy, with her kaleidoscope eyes, represents a kind of muse, urging the listener to embrace their own inner creativity and to open themselves up to the vast possibilities of the world around them.

One interpretation of the song is that it is a tribute to LSD, a hallucinogenic drug that was popular in the 1960s. The letters L, S, and D are found in the title, and several of the song’s references and vivid imagery allude to the experience of taking the drug. However, The Beatles always denied that the song was about drug use.

A true Beatles fan appreciates any covers made by any artist period. If you say that Ms. Cyrus here should leave the Beatles alone then aren't you the one who doesn't want the world to know how amazing the Beatles are? Remember the love you take is equal to the love you make. Peace and love my dudes

1. A true Beatles fan doesn’t have to like covers. A true Beatles fan can just like The Beatles as originally by the Beatles.

2. Miley Cyrus should leave the Beatles alone because she has butchered this song. Her obviously auto tuned “singing” cannot even compete with the immense power of John Lennon’s vocals on this song.

3. I’m pretty sure everyone knows who amazing the Beatles are. They are considered the most influential band of the 20th Century, if not, of all time.

4. Don’t make a reference to The End if you’re just going to spread hippie propaganda. Which is kind of ironic as it’s almost like you’re trying to get people mad by saying that “if you don’t like ALL covers, including this one, then you’re not a true Beatles fan.” If you’re trying to spread “peace and love” then how about you just stay away from the Beatles as well.

@Eugene Debs Yes exactly.

Satsuma Salanewt I said “appreciate”, not “like”. There’s a difference my man lol. I don’t like the cover but I do appreciate it being made, stop being a baby and grow up.

@Satsuma Salanewt you should probably check out her live performances. She doesn't need autotune at all

Very trippy, manic and almost scary. I didn't know how I would feel about this, but its a good cover. It's really hard to pull off a Beatles song, especially their psychedelic stuff but this is just weird in all the right ways.

Exactly! It's each individual's ability as an artist to make it their own, not replicate but revive.
