3) Flash was an English progressive rock group, formed by former Yes guitarist Peter Banks and vocalist Colin Carter in August 1971. After Peter Banks found himself replaced in Yes by Steve Howe, he set his sights on creating a new band. That band was Flash. The group formed in 1971 when Banks recruited longtime associate Ray Bennett (Gun) along with Colin Carter (Pete Bardens' Camel) and Mike Hough. Original Yes keyboardist Tony Kaye rounded out the group. Flash had a sound that felt a lot like that of Yes on its first two albums, but perhaps with a more pop-oriented texture. The group also had a more free-form approach to its virtuosic jamming, seeming to prefer improvisation to well-charted music. Flash's first album, a self-titled one, was released the following year. Kaye did not stay around very long past that release. Rather than replace him, the group carried on as a four-piece. They released two more albums, In the Can and Out of Our Hands in 1973. The group broke up shortly afterwards.

Dead Ahead
Flash Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Trying to please her king,
He sees her there, he knows the score
He knows the luck she'll bring.
Queen Bee giving all she has
For everyone she'll sing
A wounded bird, a wounded dog
Dressed in royal finery,
A feathered hat she wears,
In a crowd around her royal feet
Is a girl in quiet tears.
Strangers look through jealous eyes
At a woman with a ring;
She has her share of happiness
And all her children sing.
Mother Earth, a fountain ---
Likes statues of a thousand years
Mother Earth, a mountain
And still her shadow falls on you
She reigns when Sun is shining;
Protector of the City Heart
Source of all your dying.
Protector of the City Heart
Keeper of it's keys;
Dreams and pictures of the times,
Childhood's only friend.
The song Dead Ahead by Flash is a poetic and evocative piece that seems to reference the power of nature and its relationship to humanity. The opening lines suggest a sense of harmony between Mother Nature and her king, with the implication that she is trying to appease him and bring good fortune. This is followed by a stanza that appears to describe a Queen Bee who is a symbol of productivity and generosity - giving all she has for the benefit of others, even the wounded and vulnerable.
The next stanza paints a picture of a woman who is both regal and compassionate, wearing a feathered hat and surrounded by a crowd that includes a weeping girl. The lyrics suggest that this woman has found her own measure of happiness and contentment, despite the jealousy of strangers who envy the ring on her finger.
Yet the main theme of the song seems to be the power and mystery of nature itself, represented by the figure of Mother Earth. The lines "Likes statues of a thousand years / And still her shadow falls on you" convey a sense of timelessness and permanence, as if the natural world is an enduring force that dwarfs human concerns. Yet at the same time, Mother Earth is described as a protector and keeper of the keys - suggesting that she can both nurture and control the destiny of those who live within her embrace.
Overall, Dead Ahead is a song that invites reflection on the interplay between humanity and the natural world. Through its imagery and symbolism, it encourages a sense of awe and respect for the power of nature, while also acknowledging the joy and challenges of human relationships and experiences.
