3) Flash was an English progressive rock group, formed by former Yes guitarist Peter Banks and vocalist Colin Carter in August 1971. After Peter Banks found himself replaced in Yes by Steve Howe, he set his sights on creating a new band. That band was Flash. The group formed in 1971 when Banks recruited longtime associate Ray Bennett (Gun) along with Colin Carter (Pete Bardens' Camel) and Mike Hough. Original Yes keyboardist Tony Kaye rounded out the group. Flash had a sound that felt a lot like that of Yes on its first two albums, but perhaps with a more pop-oriented texture. The group also had a more free-form approach to its virtuosic jamming, seeming to prefer improvisation to well-charted music. Flash's first album, a self-titled one, was released the following year. Kaye did not stay around very long past that release. Rather than replace him, the group carried on as a four-piece. They released two more albums, In the Can and Out of Our Hands in 1973. The group broke up shortly afterwards.

La Calandria
Flash Lyrics

Pendiente del balcón
Se hallaba una calandria
Cantando su dolor
Hasta que un gorrioncillo
A su jaula llego
Si usted puede sacarme
Y el pobre gorrioncillo
De ella se enamoro
Y el pobre como pudo
Los alambres rompió
Y la ingrata calandria
Después que la sacó
Tan luego se vio libre
Voló, voló y voló
El pobre gorrioncillo
Todavía la siguió
PA' ver si le cumplía
Lo que le prometió
La malvada calandria
Esto le contestó
A uste ni lo conozco
Ni presa he sido yo
Y triste el gorrioncillo
Luego se regresó
Se paró en un manzano
Lloró, lloró y lloró
Y ahora en esa jaula
Pendiente del balcón
Se encuentra el gorrioncillo
Cantando su pasión
En una jaula de oro
Pendiente del balcón
Se hallaba una calandria
Cantando su dolor
Hasta que un gorrioncillo
A su jaula llego
"Si usted puede sacarme
Con usted yo me voy
Y el pobre gorrioncillo
De ella se enamoro
Y el pobre como pudo
Los alambres rompió
Y la ingrata calandria
Después que la sacó
Tan luego se vio libre
Voló, voló y voló
The song La Calandria by Flash tells the story of a captive bird, a calandria, singing sadly in its golden cage hanging off a balcony. Then, a little sparrow comes along and asks the calandria to take it with her if she gets out of the cage. The calandra initially agrees, and the sparrow falls in love with the calandria. Eventually, the sparrow helps the calandria escape by breaking the wires of the cage. But, instead of keeping her promise, the calandria flies away, leaving the sparrow heartbroken. The song concludes with the sparrow returning to its cage, singing passionately, while the calandria is free, probably singing somewhere out in the wild.
The lyrics of La Calandria can be interpreted as a metaphor for people who make promises but never keep them. It is a song about wild promises, a seductive promise that is never kept. Moreover, it may also be a love song, perhaps reflecting on the nature of love and the human heart. It speaks of the importance of keeping promises and fulfilling one's word.
