Tears
Flatt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I used to sit alone at night and worry little darling
For I thought you meant the world to me
But now things have changed and those days are gone forever
So I'll never shed another tear

I'll never shed another tear now I don't care what happens
You have proved your love untrue to me
There's nothing you can do that will ever change my feelings
So I'll never shed another tear

With a broken heart I'll never forget the vows we made together
The many times you told me not to fear
But now you've forgotten and you've left me here forever
So I'll never shed another tear

Now you should have told me dear that you were only fooling
Then I'd never learn to love you so

Then I wouldn't have all these heartaches my darling
Dreading the day I see you go

Overall Meaning

In Flatt & Scruggs's "I'll Never Shed Another Tear," the lyrics describe an individual's experience with heartache and the decision to move on from a relationship that has become untrue. The song is a classic bluegrass ballad that showcases the genre's ability to convey raw emotion through simple lyrics and acoustic instruments. The song starts with the singer expressing their previous worries over their lover, whom they believed they would always love. However, as time passed, their lover's true intentions were revealed, and they no longer hold the same place in the singer's heart.

The lyrics then switch to the singer declaring that they will no longer shed tears over their lost love. This is an expression of their decision to move on from the heartache and to accept that their lover will never change. The singer acknowledges that they still remember the vows they made together and the promises their lover once made. However, those promises have been forgotten, and their lover has left them with a broken heart.

As the song finishes, the singer speaks directly to their ex-lover, expressing that they wish their lover had been honest about their true intentions. If their lover had told them they were only fooling around, they could have saved the singer from experiencing heartache and pain. However, the singer acknowledges their mistakes and accepts the situation, looking toward the future without shedding another tear.

Overall, "I'll Never Shed Another Tear" is a bluegrass classic that expresses the emotions of heartache and moving on with simple yet powerful lyrics.

Crying holy unto the Lord
Crying holy unto the Lord
Oh, if I could I surely would
Stand on the rock where Moses stood

Sinners, run and hide your face
Sinners, run and hide your face
Go and run into the rocks and hide your face
The rocks got no hiding place

Crying holy unto the Lord
Crying holy unto the Lord
Oh, if I could I surely would
Stand on the rock where Moses stood

Lord, I ain't no sinner now
Lord, I ain't no sinner now
I've been to the river and I've been baptized
And I ain't no sinner now

Crying holy unto the Lord
Crying holy unto the Lord
Oh, if I could I surely would
Stand on the rock where Moses stood

Lord, I ain't no stranger now
Lord, I ain't no stranger now
I've been introduced to the Father and the Son
And I ain't no stranger now

Crying holy unto the Lord
Crying holy unto the Lord
Oh, if I could I surely would
Stand on the rock where Moses stood

I really like this old time gospel from these guys

Folks, this is the sound of REAL music...Totally untrained voices, singing what they feel, and singing it straight from the heart. Cannot get more authentic Americana than this. If you want to know what kind of simple, respectful people we USED to have in this country (the ones who built it last century), you're lookin at 'em. Honest as the day is long. Wouldn't dare catch one goin through a door held open for 'em without saying "thank you." God help us, when they are all gone.

As my old preacher used to say: "Now, if that don't light yer fire, then your wood is WET!!" These guys didn't have a blueprint, or anyone to copy - they just went out there and did it. (Graves was amazing, by the way!)

William Shepherd

This is a great gospel tune by Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and their Foggy Mountain boys. All of these men were true masters of their craft, and the genuiness of their faith in our savior shines so brightly in this performance. It is such a blessing to know we are free from the chains of sin and that we can "Cry Holy Unto the Lord!"

Some good stuff right here along with fiddler Paul Warren and Curley Seckler

Sorry I forgot the great Josh Graves

It just don't get any better than this!!!! Instrumentation is perfect!! I've often wondered how Jake kept that A string on his bass so bright using Super Nils :) He's sure putting it out there for the old 639 !

There’s been a lot of banjo players and many great ones but nobody plays like Earl. He had something special nobody since has had.
