Oh Well
Fleetwood Mac Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can't help about the shape I'm in
I can't sing, I ain't pretty and my legs are thin
But don't ask me what I think of you
I might not give the answer that you want me to

Now, when I talked to God, I knew He'd understand
He said, "Stick by my side and I'll be your guiding hand
But don't ask me what I think of you
I might not give the answer that you want me to"

Ooh, well

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well" touch on themes of self-image and introspection, as well as the complexity of human relationships. The opening lines, "I can't help about the shape I'm in / I can't sing, I ain't pretty and my legs are thin," express a sense of self-doubt and insecurity, as the singer acknowledges physical flaws and deficiencies in their abilities. However, the following lines suggest a defiance in the face of judgment, as the singer warns, "don't ask me what I think of you / I might not give the answer that you want me to." This could be interpreted as a refusal to conform to societal expectations or to be swayed by outside opinions.

The second half of the verse shifts to a conversation with God, as the singer seeks guidance and reassurance. The line "He said, 'Stick by my side and I'll be your guiding hand'" implies a sense of faith and trust in a higher power, which contrasts with the earlier expression of self-doubt. However, the repetition of the previous warning in the final line, "I might not give the answer that you want me to," suggests a continued resistance to external pressure and a commitment to staying true to one's own beliefs and feelings.

Said by others who actually knew him, Peter Green was so self-effacing he named his band after his friends, drummer and bassist Mick Fleetwood and John McVie. The only guitarist to give B.B. King the cold sweats. Fantastic guitarist who will be greatly missed.

Hi,how are you?

@jeffreycaseau6729

Classic blues/rock.

@megadave1197

He named it that because he knew he wasn’t going to be in the band long.

@dougkendall6867

Although at some of their initial gigs they were billed as "Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, also featuring Jeremy Spencer." You can see why they shortened it later...

@mechanic6682

Exactly. So not really self-effacing.
