Fleetwood Mac was founded by guitarist Peter Green, drummer Mick Fleetwood and guitarist Jeremy Spencer, before bassist John McVie joined the lineup for their self-titled debut album. Danny Kirwan joined as a third guitarist in 1968. Keyboardist Christine Perfect (later known as Christine McVie), who contributed as a session musician from the second album, married McVie and joined in 1970.

Primarily a British blues band, Fleetwood Mac scored a UK number one with "Albatross", and had other hits such as the singles "Oh Well" and "Man of the World". All three guitarists left in succession during the early 1970s, to be replaced by guitarists Bob Welch and Bob Weston and vocalist Dave Walker. By 1974, all three of them had either departed or been dismissed, leaving the band without a male lead vocalist or guitarist. In late 1974, while Fleetwood was scouting studios in Los Angeles, he was introduced to American folk-rock duo Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Fleetwood Mac soon asked Buckingham to be their new lead guitarist, and Buckingham agreed on condition that Nicks would also join the band.

The addition of Buckingham and Nicks gave the band a more pop rock sound, and their 1975 self-titled album, Fleetwood Mac, reached No. 1 in the United States. Rumours (1977), Fleetwood Mac's second album after the arrival of Buckingham and Nicks, produced four U.S. Top 10 singles and remained at number one on the American albums chart for 31 weeks. It also reached the top spot in various countries around the world and won a Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1978. Rumours has sold over 40 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums in history. The band went through personal turmoil while recording the album, as both the romantic partnerships in the band (one being John and Christine McVie, and the other being Buckingham and Nicks) separated while continuing to make music together.

The band's personnel remained stable through three more studio albums, but by the late 1980s began to disintegrate. After Buckingham and Nicks each left the band, they were replaced by a number of other guitarists and vocalists. A 1993 one-off performance for the first inauguration of Bill Clinton featured the lineup of Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Nicks, and Buckingham back together for the first time in six years. A full reunion occurred four years later, and the group released their fourth U.S. No. 1 album, The Dance (1997), a live compilation of their hits, also marking the 20th anniversary of Rumours. Christine McVie left the band in 1998, but continued to work with the band in a session capacity. Meanwhile, the group remained together as a four-piece, releasing their most recent studio album, Say You Will, in 2003. Christine McVie rejoined the band full-time in 2014. In 2018, Buckingham was fired from the band and was replaced by Mike Campbell, formerly of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Neil Finn of Split Enz and Crowded House.

Fleetwood Mac has sold more than 120 million records worldwide, making them one of the world's best-selling bands. In 1979, the group was honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 1998 the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and received the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music.

Danny Kirwan, guitarist, songwriter and early member of Fleetwood Mac (1968–1972) died in London, England, on 8 June 2018, aged 68. An obituary in The New York Times said he had died in his sleep after contracting pneumonia earlier in the year. The British music magazine Mojo quoted Christine McVie as saying: "Danny Kirwan was the white English blues guy. Nobody else could play like him. He was a one-off ... Danny and Peter [Green] gelled so well together. Danny had a very precise, piercing vibrato – a unique sound ... He was a perfectionist; a fantastic musician and a fantastic writer." One of Kirwan's songs, "Tell Me All the Things You Do" from the 1970 album Kiln House, was included in the set of the 2018–19 An Evening with Fleetwood Mac tour.

On 28 May 2020 Neil Finn, featuring Nicks and McVie, with Campbell on guitar, released the song “Find Your Way Back Home” for the Auckland, New Zealand homeless shelter Auckland City Mission.

Founding member Peter Green died on 25 July 2020 at the age of 73. In October 2020, Rumours again entered the Billboard top 10. The album received 30.6 million plays on streaming platforms the week of October 15, after a TikTok video of the song "Dreams" went viral.

On 30 November 2022, it was announced that band member Christine McVie died at the age of 79, after a short illness.

To all the people in the US that think this album was a flop, it was very sucessful all over Europe. It reached no. 1 in the UK, and top 10 all across the Old Continent. It edned up selling over 5 million copies total, which is far, far away from being a flop. I already liked Fleetwood Mac when I was in high school in te early 2000's, but I didn't know much about them, nor I was that familiar with their discography. I knew a few songs, and I liked them. It was THIS album on MC I came across in one of my friend's father's collection. I asked him if he could borrow it to me, so I could give it a listen. Fortunately he said yes, and BAM! This album made me a super fan. From there I started collecting whatever I could find from Fleetwood Mac, and now I own everything thay have ever published. I've also seen them live twice. I own this album on record, CD, and the old MC I never gave back to my friend's father (sorry Mr. J...). So thank you Behind The Mask for bringing me to this amazing band. Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks are my absolute number one of all time. P.S. This was my first FM album. After that I rented the Tango In The Night tour video from a local video store. Then I bought a Bulgarian editin of Best Of with this lineup on the cover, and just a couple of Lindsey songs on it. For a long time I thought THIS was their classic and ulimate lineup. I was introduced to Lindsey much later in my fandom lol. I wish you all the best from Macedonia.

It was their worst selling album since 1974, Behind the Mask wasn't a hit compared to any record Fleetwood Mac did besides maybe Time which followed this. "Save Me" the lead single made #53 in the UK, that was the biggest hit off this album. It was not "very successful" as you said. The initial buzz was big, letting it debut at #1 on the album chart and it was decent but the lack of Lindsey Buckingham really turned people off in the long run.

To me, Christine was the glue that held the band together for so many years. When Lindsey left in 1987, nearly every single put out from 1988-1995 was written by Christine. She has always been the underrated in my eyes. Honestly, no knock on Stevie, Rick or Billy, but without Christine's strong songwriting on As Long As You Follow, Save Me, Skies The Limit, Behind The Mask, Love Shines, Heart Of Gold, Sooner Or Later and Nights In Estoril, Fleetwood Mac would have completely fell apart after Lindsey left in '87.

Such a great record. This version of the band was a refreshing change from the Lindsey Buckingham show. Don’t get me wrong, Lindsey is great and the work he did with FM is incredible. But, this album seemed like more of a group effort. Lindsey left the band in a lurch when he walked away, so the band shouldn’t have been judged so harshly when they brought in two new members and wanted to keep moving ahead.

I remember this song. stunned that Christine McVie penned this one. It reminded me a lot of the way Buckingham wrote his music. At this point it was her song writing and Steve Nicks' that carried the band forward. They were so fortunate that they are one of the very rare bands where three of the members were fantastic song writers (Buckingham, Nicks, McVie) and could survive writing hits even if one of the three left. They were definitely the strongest when all three worked together, but this proved beyond a doubt they could and did succeed without Buckingham. They proved it again without McVie in 2003 when Buckingham and Nicks carried the songwriting load.

The last single that the supergroup ever had that made the Billboard Top 40, this was the feature song of their 1990 album, Behind the Mask. A Christine McVie-penned ballad, it followed the model of both their Fleetwood Mac and Rumours releases, with a California-pop sensibility, searing lyrics, and a truly infectious hook. While Lindsey Buckingham had left the band by then, their crisp musicianship was still very much in evidence. Although their 16-year reign as the kings and queens of pop, nevertheless, among Fleetwood Mac fans, this is one of their favorites. Incredibly, I don’t think I’ve heard it on any radio in nearly 20 years. Still, “Save Me” reminds us all how brilliant a songwriter Christine McVie was in her prime.

This song came out the year I was born (1990). Very interesting song. Amazing start with the 12-String Guitar. I’ve been playing guitar for 16 years and it’s amazing! Grew up with Rock n Roll music my whole life!

Insanely underrated album and folks who dismiss it because of the lack of Lindsey Buckingham are missing out. Came out at a time when musical tastes were changing but I still thought it should have done better. This track is strong but "Skies the Limit" or "Love is Dangerous" would have been better choices for a lead single.

If youre listening to Save Me by Fleetwood Mac in 2022 ✨️🥁🎸 then you know fine music. Love ❤️ 80s n 90s. Save Me is my one of my top favorites dam good rock track after Sweet little lies n Everywhere. Christine Mc Vie is pure gem what a sensational wonderful voice. She's a under rated Legendary song writer n vocalist... Both she n Stevie Nicks are my favorite from Brit American Rock band Fleetwood Mac.

@ S Mac i they were there to replace Lindsey Buckingham and actually did a bang up job ! THEN they rehired Buckingham and then fired him again ! i enjoyed his playing but apparently he's really difficult to work with . keep quality music alive CHEERS !

Nice to see so much appreciation for Christine in the comments, her songs were easily the best part of these wilderness years for Fleetwood Mac (though Stevie's contributions to Behind The Mask were excellent as well, it's just too bad she didn't stick around for the next album). Though I always felt it was a mistake releasing this song on Greatest Hits and then also including it on Behind The Mask, not really sure why they did that.

Cant get enough of this song! Flat out Front running band, So sad Lindsey departure stains such a legacy (though it appears they had their own personal Group Swap thing over years) Stevie always wanted to be in Heartbreakers so interesting to see how Mike Campbell injection will go, 2 of most talented and hauntingly beautiful women in rock also, I thought Stevie cameos as backup singer were beautifully produced ,and what a performance by Ms McVie!

Great song, great video clip! Behind the Mask album also had a great producer Greg Ladanyi who also produced the 2 songs "As long as you follow" and "No questions asked". Greg Ladanyi's ambient sound signature carries over to the songs on Behind the Mask album.

You apparently like Christine McVie's writing as those were both her songs. She also wrote the title track, Behind the Mask. Nicks wrote Love Is Dangerous, Affairs of the Heart, Freedom (with Mike Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), and The Second Time. The classic lineup of those two wrote 7 of the 13 songs, and sang on 10 of the 13 songs to keep mostly their old sound.
