New to Nashville's singer-songwriter scene is artist Fleurie, the musical moniker of Lauren Strahm, a 24-year-old hailing from the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. The French word, meaning "in bloom" was chosen by the artist herself, who wanted an alias that accurately represented her sound. With an array of musical influences, including Coldplay, Imogen Heap, Dashboard Confessional, and The Fray, Strahm cites that her goal in writing every song is staying honest and true to the sound within her and the story being told.
The first EP from Fleurie, Fear & Fable, was released in October of 2013. Though it bears some darker tones thematically and lyrically, Strahm manages to deliver them softly and quite vulnerably to the listener. Fear & Fable is a collection of carefully constructed stories inhabiting haunting melodies woven through organic sounds - very much so a minimalist approach but with sonic depth.
Since moving to Nashville and the release of Fear & Fable, Fleurie has been at work exploring new sonic landscapes and delving into writing the part of the story she finds herself journeying now. Fleurie has a new EP in the works for release spring/summer of 2015.

Fire In My Bones
Fleurie Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Staging a revolting, quite as its jolting
Singular in motion, fighting but I'm frozen
Shaking and its shifting, falling as I'm lifting
Air you breathe, start to see
A bright light tunnel and a blue kite floating at the end
Summer melts into a snow scape, tell your heart to me
Power to protect me, don't let it affect me
Spirals like a staircase, racing like a car chase
Pulses push the limits, testing my resistance
Cameras that capture, moments that enrapture
Don't let go, no, just lie low
A bright light tunnel and a blue kite floating at the end
Summer melts into a snow scape, tell your heart to me
Wake me up and then speak, then speak
A bright light tunnel and a blue kite floating at the end
Summer melts into a snow scape, tell your heart to me
Wake me up and then speak, then speak
If it feels right, if it feels right
If it feels right, it's probably wrong
If it feels right, if it feels right
If it feels right, it's probably wrong
Spinning out, spinning out of control
Take it back, give me something to hold
Spinning out, spinning out
A bright light tunnel and a blue kite floating at the end
Summer melts into a snow scape, tell your heart to me
Wake me up and then speak, then speak
A bright light tunnel and a blue kite floating at the end
Summer melts into a snow scape, tell your heart to me
Wake me up and then speak, then speak
Fire in my bones quakes
The lyrics of “Fire in My Bones” by Fleurie tell a story of a person who is struggling with inner turmoil, represented by the line “fire in my bones quakes.” Despite this, the person remains unbroken and fights back against their struggles, as expressed by “bending but it won't break” and “singular in motion, fighting but I'm frozen.” The conflicting emotions and actions of the person are portrayed by the lines “shaking and its shifting, falling as I'm lifting.”
Throughout the song, there is a sense of transformation and growth for the person, as they move from a state of feeling overwhelmed and out of control, to one of clarity and empowerment. This is represented by the lines “air you breathe, start to see” and “power to protect me, don't let it affect me.”
The chorus of the song features a recurring image of a “bright light tunnel” and a “blue kite floating at the end,” which represents a sense of hope or a way forward. This is further emphasized by the line “summer melts into a snow scape, tell your heart to me,” which suggests a transition from one phase of life to another, and the need to communicate and share feelings.
Overall, “Fire in My Bones” is a reflection on the struggles of life and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. It is a powerful and emotional song that speaks to the experience of many people who have faced hardship and come out stronger on the other side.
