New to Nashville's singer-songwriter scene is artist Fleurie, the musical moniker of Lauren Strahm, a 24-year-old hailing from the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. The French word, meaning "in bloom" was chosen by the artist herself, who wanted an alias that accurately represented her sound. With an array of musical influences, including Coldplay, Imogen Heap, Dashboard Confessional, and The Fray, Strahm cites that her goal in writing every song is staying honest and true to the sound within her and the story being told.
The first EP from Fleurie, Fear & Fable, was released in October of 2013. Though it bears some darker tones thematically and lyrically, Strahm manages to deliver them softly and quite vulnerably to the listener. Fear & Fable is a collection of carefully constructed stories inhabiting haunting melodies woven through organic sounds - very much so a minimalist approach but with sonic depth.
Since moving to Nashville and the release of Fear & Fable, Fleurie has been at work exploring new sonic landscapes and delving into writing the part of the story she finds herself journeying now. Fleurie has a new EP in the works for release spring/summer of 2015.

We Were Young
Fleurie Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Crash back into my world, it's been so long
We're here again in the moonlight
That night I'll never forget the way you moved
The way you left the room so sad
Like nothing ever turned out like you thought it would
Oh, we were young
And I'm still in love, I'm still a fool for you
Oh I caught your eye
Tell me you didn't try to compare me
To the girl in your mind
You walk toward me
My legs are frozen to the ground
I couldn't make a sound if I wanted to
But you, fearless as ever
Always one to please the crowd, you flash a smile at me so sad
Like nothing ever turned out like you thought it should
Oh, we were young
And I'm still in love, I'm still a fool for you
Oh I caught your eye
Tell me you didn't try to compare me
To the girl in your mind
What's the difference?
You never called, you never wrote
I left it alone, but something's different
Something's exactly the same - the way your lips move
When you say my name so sad
Like nothing was as perfect as you wanted it to be
We were free
And I'm still waiting to see
If you'll come back around tonight
I caught your eye
Tell me you didn't try to compare me
To the girl in your mind
The girl you'll never find
The one you'll never find
Never as perfect as you wanted it to be
The song "We Were Young" by Fleurie is a nostalgic reflection upon a past relationship. The opening lyrics, "Where did you come from, crash back into my world, it's been so long" indicate that the songwriter was surprised by the reappearance of her former lover. She then describes the two of them being together again, feeling young and foolish in their youth. The memories of this relationship are bittersweet as the chorus repeats "we were young, and I'm still in love, I'm still a fool for you."
Despite the happy memories the songwriter has of her past relationship, there is an undercurrent of sadness and concern. She describes her former love leaving the room "so sad" and "like nothing ever turned out like you thought it would," which suggests a feeling of disappointment or disillusionment. The line "tell me you didn't try to compare me to the girl in your mind" reveals a deep-seated insecurity on the part of the songwriter.
The bridge of the song shifts to describe the present day, where the songwriter encounters her former love again. She notes that "something's different, something's exactly the same" - which shows the complicated nature of love and how feelings can change while still holding onto old emotions. The song ends on a melancholic note, with the singer hoping her former love will come back while acknowledging that "the girl you'll never find, the one you'll never find, never as perfect as you wanted it to be."
