Before You Go
Flight 409 Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Every breath I take still hurts
Maybe it's just the alcohol burning through my veins
But either way I'll be missing you to death
And if I don't get out of this alive
Just know I loved you back
But I don't owe you anything at all
But I don't owe you anything at all
It's just the look in your eyes
The way your hair falls to the side
It's the hole in wall when my fist went through
It's the scene that I made
Baby I'm not your everything
And I'm never ever gonna be
But I don't owe you anything at all
No I don't owe you anything at all
You're in too deep to pull the strings
You bend you break
To find a better part of me
You're in too deep to pull the strings
You bend and you break
To find a better part of me
And I'll be missing you to death
But if we don't get out of this alive
Just know I loved you back
But I don't owe you anything at all
No I don't owe you anything at all
The lyrics of Flight 409's song "Before You Go" express a feeling of longing and pain after a relationship has ended. The opening lines, "For everything it's worth, Every breath I take still hurts," imply that the singer is struggling to move on and still feels the emotional pain of the breakup. They acknowledge that alcohol may be exacerbating those feelings, but ultimately the sentiment of missing their former partner is genuine.
The lyric "But I don't owe you anything at all" may initially seem harsh or dismissive, but it can be interpreted as the singer recognizing that while they may still love their ex, they don't owe them a continued relationship or commitment. The chorus repeats this sentiment, driving home the point that the singer is not beholden to their former partner and must focus on moving forward in their own life.
The second verse reveals some of the specifics of the relationship, with references to physical altercations ("the hole in the wall when my fist went through"), and a sense of not being able to meet their partner's expectations ("Baby I'm not your everything, and I'm never ever gonna be"). These lines suggest that the relationship was perhaps volatile and unhealthy, and that the singer is still sorting through the aftermath.
Overall, "Before You Go" is a poignant and introspective song that offers a window into the complex emotions that follow the end of a relationship.
