Yeah, this was definitely one of the earliest music videos on MTV. Then as more groups got into music videos, and MTV got more to put in the rotation, this one got shelved. In the beginning, though, it was on all the time.

On this day in 1983 {September 3rd} the Flirts performed "Jukebox (Don't Put Another Dime)" on the ABC-TV Saturday afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'...
The year before on October 31st, 1982 "Jukebox" peaked at #28 {for 1 week} on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play Songs chart...
And on the same 'Bandstand' show the trio also performed "Telephone", the song was track one on side two from their 1983 album 'Born To Flirt'..
Between 1982 and 1986 the trio had seven records on the Dance Club Play Songs chart, two made the Top 10 with one reaching #1, "You and Me" for 1 week in 1985...
Besides "You and Me", their other Top 10 record was "New Toy", it reached #5 in 1986...

Such a fun song, and funny video. They played this a lot on KROQ-FM in Los Angeles. The guy is the legendary Bobby Orlando, songwriter, producer and creator of the Flirts. It was the 1980's but the red-head raided Harley Quinn's wardrobe closet or maybe Harley raided hers, lol.

This song, the video (those cheap-looking videos that were always showing when MTV was first on air - those are what I miss the most about MTV), they are all well done, the singers all sing on key and all, but it conveys such an “everyday” vibe, like the girls are just neighborhood girls bonding over some jerk who treated them poorly. Which I assume was their intent, really well done. It’s funny, I recall those days pretty well - I was 12 when MTV debuted in 1981, and MTV was a huge presence all through my HS years, early adulthood - and I know “jukebox” is in ‘Valley Girl’, a film I’ve been acquainted with since the mid 80s, but I feel like I only know “jukebox” from the days when MTV began showing “classic” videos, around ‘87-‘88-‘89, as well as from the mid-nineties 15-CD compilation “Just Can’t Get Enough”, it didn’t leave an impression when I was younger (I had to have seen it, I mean I watched a lot of mtv back in the day, it’s not possible I just never heard the song until later on…is it?

Oh well, anyway, just wanted to say how much I love the song, it’s one my 80s favorites these days. I think they really pull off the song’s subject matter with the way the girls sing, which, as I said, is “professional”, but there’s an “ordinariness” to the timber or something that makes me believe that these girls could have been seniors when I was a freshman or something like that, and they’re all bitching about some guy they all liked but got crapped on by, and I’m overhearing them and wishing they were interested in me, because I would appreciate them and make them happy, so they’d never have reason to bitch about me behind my back…I was so naive 😂

Anyway, yeah - memories…funny things 😂… those first two years (or so) of MTV really felt like something NEW was happening, and it didn’t have all the kinks worked out, and making clips that looked so professional it made you sick (maybe that was just me) the way they would just months after this video would’ve been showing a lot, especially with Duran Duran reaching superstardom, arguably the first and the biggest “video band”.
