Punch Drunk Grinning Soul
Flogging Molly Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It took me everything I had
To give all that I could
Walk beside me while I sleep
Steer me from the slumber wolf
Tangled forest of the mind
Speaks to me of self-despise
Close the window through the pane
Hear the siren's serenade

Could have been the comeback kid
The southpaws' legend glove to fill
No shadow boxer but the one
A true contender for the crown
Now this punch drunk grinning soul
In its' corner begs 'no more'

[Chorus]
Hey now, stay proud
You were lost on a blue day
Hey now, stay proud
Hey now, stay proud
You were lost on a blue day
Hey now, stay proud
But we hardly knew ya

The chamber echo never speaks
The rushin' tide devours my feet
No global warming fills this soul
For hell it freezes what it stole
From the beggar's empty plate
To our world that stuffs its' face

[Chorus]

But these tired eyes are crashin' down on me
While the paint never dries
On these four walls that now suffocate me
But tonight, maybe tonight
All will be free

Release, unlock this prison door
It can't hold me anymore
Serpent lied with sting of tale
Hand of reason rusts the nail
Now this punch drunk grinning soul
In its' corner begs 'no more'

[Chorus]

We hardly knew ya [x3]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Punch Drunk Grinning Soul" by Flogging Molly touch upon the struggles of self-doubt and the importance of perseverance. The opening lines suggest that the singer has given their all to a situation but still needs guidance to steer them away from self-destructive tendencies. The phrase "slumber wolf" may represent the inner voice that brings about these tendencies while the tangled forest of the mind may symbolize the complexities of inner thoughts that contribute to feelings of inadequacy. However, despite these difficulties, the singer acknowledges that they were once a contender, a "true contender for the crown."

The repetition of the line "punch-drunk grinning soul" throughout the song points towards the idea of a once hopeful and optimistic individual now struggling to maintain that positivity. The chorus, specifically the line "we hardly knew ya," further emphasizes the idea of fleeting moments and missed opportunities. The verse about the "beggar's empty plate" and the "world that stuffs its' face" alludes to the themes of inequality and greed in society.

On a larger scale, the song may represent the personal struggles and societal challenges faced by many individuals today. It may symbolize the resilience and perseverance needed to overcome self-doubt and inequality. However, the song ultimately offers hope for release and freedom from these struggles.

thank you so much for this video and opening statement. i lost my best friend and battle buddy from afghan to suicide. in my barracks room at ft.benning georgia several years ago. we both bonded over our irish ancestry , and love of old rebel songs. He was suffering badly from ptsd and our army refused to admit to responsibility or even help him. he died a hero still fighting a war in his mind. remember the fallen.
