You're Somebody Else
Flora Cash Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I saw the part of you
That only when you're older, you will see too
You will see too
I held the better cards
But every stroke of luck has gotta bleed through
It's gotta bleed through
You held the balance of the time
That only blindly I could read you
But I could read you
It's like you told me
Go forward slowly
It's not a race to the end

Well, you look like yourself
But you're somebody else
Only it ain't on the surface
Well, you talk like yourself
No, I hear someone else though
Now you're making me nervous

You were the better part
Of every bit of beating heart that I had
Whatever I had
I finally sat alone
Pitch black flesh and bone
Couldn't believe that you were gone

Well, you look like yourself
But you're somebody else
Only it ain't on the surface
Well, you talk like yourself
No, I hear someone else though
Now you're making me nervous

Well, you look like yourself
But you're somebody else
Only it ain't on the surface (on the surface)
Well, you talk like yourself
No, I hear someone else though
Now you're making me nervous (nervous)

Where are we?

Well, you look like yourself
But you're somebody else
Only it ain't on the surface
Well, you talk like yourself
No, I hear someone else though
Now you're making me nervous

Well, you look like yourself
But you're somebody else
Only it ain't on the surface (on the surface)
Well, you talk like yourself
No, I hear someone else though
Now you're making me nervous (nervous)

I saw the part of you

That only when you're older, you will see too
You will see too

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Flora Cash's song "You're Somebody Else" seem to describe a relationship that has altered dramatically. The first few lines suggest that the singer has seen a part of their partner that they will only fully come to understand when they themselves are older, suggesting that their partner has been hiding something from them. The next few lines imply the power dynamic has shifted, indicating that the singer's partner may have been taking advantage of them, with the singer having held the better cards until their luck turned. The line "it's got a bleed through" hints that the negative effects of this change are starting to seep through to their relationship.

The next verse then moves to describe how the relationship has changed in terms of communication. The singer used to be able to read their partner clearly, but now they feel like their partner is someone else entirely, as "you look like yourself but you're somebody else." This new version of their partner is making them nervous.

However, the lyrics end on a slightly hopeful note. The singer acknowledges that there was a time when their partner was the better part of every bit of their beating heart, and suggests they're struggling to come to terms with the fact that they're no longer together. They also appear to recognize that their partner, despite everything, still has a hidden part of themselves that they have yet to reveal. It's clear that the relationship has changed beyond recognition, and the singer is struggling to come to terms with it.

My little brother committed suicide in October 2019. He was my best friend, the first love of my life, and a beautiful person.

I don't want to miss him anymore.

I don't want to cry for him anymore.

I'm ready to be better, but it's not going to happen anytime soon.

I found this song during a random YouTube rabbit hole session, and it made me think of him. Made me miss him.

I found out that Cole Randall is from the same town as my little brother and I (Park Rapids), and that he was only a month younger than my brother.

It made the world feel a little smaller.

This song puts to words how I feel now. Chris looked like Chris. But Chris lost his battle. He left me behind.

I'll miss him for the rest of my life.

I'll tell his story for the rest of my life.

I love you, Chris.

@Tyler-go8qm

Started listening to this song in 2019.. before our grandma passed. Couldn’t listen to this song without crying.
She passed away from Lung cancer..

Her lungs didn’t collapse during biopsy luckily, she was put in ICU..

I couldn’t say any words while I was in ICU with her.. wish I would’ve but I hope she knew I loved her.

She told me and my brother that she loved us before she went,
I wasn’t there when they pulled the cord or her heart stop beating.
She lived till 72 and had a somewhat happy life I believe!
Just wish she would have quit smoking..
Forever in my heart Grandma.
I was a Freshmen when she passed.

Now I’m 19, graduating Highschool in December.
I am now recovering from meth, crack and all pills.
Didn’t use any drug before she passed.

I am so happy being in recovery and I’m more thankful for my health than I ever was in the past. ❤
We can Recover!!!

It really made me cry I don't even know why

@kxngazxre3762

This did make me cry, because of how bad I miss being younger. How of all the times I said I wanted out of my family’s house... and now it just... hurts.

@sluni5457
