Kiss With a Fist
Florence %2B the Machine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You hit me once, I hit you back
You gave a kick, I gave a slap
You smashed a plate over my head
Then I set fire to our bed

You hit me once, I hit you back
You gave a kick, I gave a slap
You smashed a plate over my head
Then I set fire to our bed, whoa

My black eye casts no shadow
Your red eye sees no blame
Your slaps don't stick, your kicks don't hit
So we remain the same

Blood sticks, sweat drips
Break the lock if it don't fit
A kick in the teeth is good for some
A kiss with a fist is better than none

Whoa, a kiss with a fist is better than none

I broke your jaw once before
I spilled your blood upon the floor
You broke my leg in return
So I sit back and watch the bed burn

Well love sticks, sweat drips
Break the lock if it don't fit
A kick in the teeth is good for some
A kiss with a fist is better than none

Whoa, a kiss with a fist is better than none

You hit me once, I hit you back
You gave a kick, I gave a slap
You smashed a plate over my head
Then I set fire to our bed, whoa

Whoa, you hit me once, I hit you back
You gave a kick, I gave a slap

You smashed a plate over my head
Then I set fire to our bed

Overall Meaning

"Kiss with a Fist" is a song by English indie rock band Florence + the Machine, released in 2008. The lyrics describe a relationship that is violent and full of physical altercations, but also contains moments of passion and intimacy. Despite the violence and aggression, the couple remains stuck in the cycle of abusive behavior, unable to break free from the intoxicating nature of their relationship.

The lyrics seem to describe a toxic and abusive relationship, with the idea that a kiss with a fist is better than none – both parties would rather have violent intimacy than no intimacy at all. The sad and somewhat dark message is that sometimes it's hard to let go of someone who is bad for you, even if you know the relationship isn't healthy. The line "Your slaps don’t stick, your kicks don’t hit, so we remain the same" could be interpreted as the couple being immune to the abuse, and that it no longer affects them enough to make them want to leave the situation.

Overall, the song is a commentary on the complexities of relationships and how it’s not always as simple as just walking away. It’s a raw and honest depiction of a relationship that’s both destructive and intoxicating.

Line by Line Meaning

You hit me once, I hit you back
We have a pattern of violence in our relationship where we react to each other's aggression in the same way.

You gave a kick, I gave a slap
Our arguments escalate quickly to physical violence where we each try to one-up the other with our reactions.

You smashed a plate over my head
You don't hold back when it comes to expressing your anger, even to the point of causing physical harm.

Then I set fire to our bed, whoa
I retaliate with equally destructive behavior, risking the destruction of things that have deeper meanings to us, like our bed.

My black eye casts no shadow
Despite the physical signs of harm, you refuse to take responsibility for your actions or their harm to me.

Your red eye sees no blame
You similarly refuse to recognize the pain and destruction that has been caused by your own aggression towards me.

Your slaps don't stick, your kicks don't hit
Despite your attempts to harm me, your impact is temporary and ineffective. I refuse to let you break me.

So we remain the same
Our relationship is stuck in a cycle of violence and retaliation, with no resolution or healing in sight.

Blood sticks, sweat drips
Our physical violence has real consequences, both in the immediate injuries caused and in the lingering damage to our emotions and relationship.

Break the lock if it don't fit
We try to force this relationship to work even though it is broken and dysfunctional, refusing to acknowledge when it is beyond repair.

A kick in the teeth is good for some
Some people might see physical aggression as a healthy or effective way to release anger or assert dominance.

A kiss with a fist is better than none
Our relationship is so dysfunctional and full of aggression that even moments of physical intimacy overshadowed by violence may be better than nothing at all.

I broke your jaw once before
I have also caused you significant physical harm in the past, exacerbating the cycle of aggression between us.

I spilled your blood upon the floor
My own acts of violence have resulted in your suffering as well, further fueling the cycle of retaliation between us.

You broke my leg in return
You have also reacted violently to my aggression, adding another painful experience to the already harmful cycle between us.

So I sit back and watch the bed burn
Even as our relationship falls apart in flames, we are both complicit in the destruction and unwilling to make meaningful changes to stop it.

Quote from Florence and the Machine's myspace page:
"Kiss with a fist is NOT a song about domestic violence.
it is about two people pushing each other to phsycological extremes because they love each other.
the song is not about one person being attacked, or any actual physical violence, there are no victims in this song.
sometimes the love two people have for each other is a destructive force. but they cant have it any other way,
because its what holds them together, they enjoy the drama and pushing each others buttons.
the only way to express these extreme emotions is with extreme imagery, all of which is fantasism and nothing in the song is based on reality.

leona lewis's bleeding love isn't actually about her bleeding.
this isnt really about punching someone in the face. thank you and goodnight."

If 2009 could only be represented by a single music video this would be it. ❤

@nameface6934

if you like Florence and the machine you should check out Lonely Gimmick - All Along the Watchtower, it gives me Florence vibes and it's a great take on a classic song

@LifeOfJimbo

this was 2008 tho 👀

@SaoirseK

@@LifeOfJimbo correct Kiss With A Fist the song itself was released in 2008. However the music video was released later. Not only because of the success of the song within the South London music scene but to help showcase F+TM to a wider auidence. The music video was released on the 25th November 2009 to be exact hence the strong 2009 aesthetic.
