My Baby Just Cares For Me
Florence & Jools Holland Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My baby don't care for shows
My baby don't care for clothes
My baby just cares for me
My baby don't care for cars and races
My baby don't care for high-tone places

Liz Taylor is not his style
And even Lana Turner's smile
is somethin' he can't see

My baby don't care who knows it
My baby just cares for me

My baby don't care for shows
And he don't even care for clothes
My baby just cares for me

My baby don't care for cars and races
My baby don't care for
he don't care for high-tone places

I wonder what's wrong with baby
My baby just cares for

Just says his prayers for
My baby just cares for me

Overall Meaning

The song "My Baby Just Cares For Me," originally recorded by Nina Simone in 1958, has become a jazz standard and has been covered by many artists over the years, including the version by Florence Welch and Jools Holland. The lyrics of the song reflect the simplicity of true love and how it can transcend material things and societal norms. The singer describes how her lover doesn't care for things like expensive cars or famous movie stars, but only cares for her.

The first two lines of the song, "My baby don't care for shows, my baby don't care for clothes," express how her lover has no interest in superficial things. He isn't impressed by shows or fancy clothes. Instead, he just cares for the singer herself. He isn't attracted to high-tone places or famous people, as expressed in the lines "My baby don't care for cars and races, Liz Taylor is not his style, and even Lana Turner's smile is something he can't see." He's not impressed by the glitz and glamour that society values so much.

The singer seems a bit puzzled by her lover's simplicity, wondering "I wonder what's wrong with baby?" But ultimately, she accepts that her lover's love for her is genuine and unwavering, as expressed in the final lines of the song, "My baby just cares for, just says his prayers for, my baby just cares for me." It's a sweet and simple song that celebrates the power of love in its purest form.

I wouldn't mind hearing a jazz album by her in the future after watching this... it would go nicely with all the other amazing music she's made.

What a cover, what a sweetheart, what a voice, you just gotta love Florence :)

flashingathena

You know when a performer can experiment and try other genres and succeed at them (and live too!) that they have real talent. I love this girl! And she is a true beauty! I hope she keeps growing as an artist and ignores the hype that somehow succeeds in making so many young artists regress to (a tormented) adolescence.

aberazzi

I really do wish Florence would make an album like this... even bring Jools to play the keys on a few of them.

Jake Barnes

Wow. Florence can just casually sing ANY song at all and make it sound phenomenal! I <3 U Florence! :)
