The band consists of: Florence Welch (vocals), Robert Ackroyd (guitar), Isabella Summers (aka Isa Machine - keyboards), Tom Monger (harp), Mark Saunders (bass, percussion), Christopher Lloyd Hayden (drums, backing vocals), Rusty Bradshaw (keyboard, backing vocals) and Sam White (backing vocals).

Lead singer, Florence Welch, was an art-college drop-out, from Camberwell (London), who was discovered singing Motown covers in a nightclub toilet, drunk. ”The Machine” name originated with an in-joke between Welch and Summers. Musically, Florence + The Machine's sound is sometimes referred to as soul-inspired indie rock. Welch grew up listening to The White Stripes and Kate Bush and says she writes metaphorical songs that are "stories with consequences and weird morality issues."

2008
Florence + The Machine's music has received praise across the British music media, especially from the BBC, who played a large part in their rise to prominence, by bringing them into the spotlight as part of "BBC Introducing" (a program to support unsigned artists) - firstly at South By South West (SXSW) in Austin, Texas in March 2008 and later that year (Sept 2008) the band recorded a full session for the BBC at their Maida Vale studios.

2009 - 2010 - first awards and first studio album - "Lungs"
At the Brit Awards 2009, Florence + The Machine received the Critics' Choice Award at the Brits in the UK. The award was introduced in 2008 (when it was awarded to Adele) and focuses on new and emerging British talent, voted for by a panel of music industry experts.

The band's début album was "Lungs" (Jul 2009, Universal), preceded by third single Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up) (Jun 2009, Moshi Moshi). "Lungs" went on to become number one in the UK album charts in January 2010, and won the MasterCard British Album award at the 2010 Brits, where they performed a hugely popular collaboration, You've Got the Dirtee Love (live at The Brit Awards 2010) with Dizzee Rascal - a mix of You've Got the Love, the Candi Staton cover from "Dog Days Are Over" (Nov 2008, IAmSound), and Dizzee’s Dirtee Cash (Sept 2009, Dirtee Stank).

2011 - second studio album - "Ceremonials"
The second album "Ceremonials" (31 Oct 2011, Island) - with which Welch was inspired for the title and some themes from a '70s Super 8 film of an art installation, she recalls: "... this big procession of kind of coquette-style hippies and all these different coloured robes and masks, and it was all to do with colour, really saturated, brightly coloured pastas and balloons. I saw it a couple years ago, and it was called 'Ceremonials' and then, like, Roman numerals after it. And the word sort of stuck with me, and I think the whole idea of performance ...". The album is also influenced by hymns, poems and church bells.

2012 - MTV Unplugged album - "MTV Unplugged"
In 2012, the band released a live album - "MTV Unplugged" (Apr 2012, Universal) - as part of the MTV Unplugged series. It was filmed in December 2011 in New York’s oldest synagogue building, Angel Orensanz Center, with the band being backed by a ten-person choir.

2015 - third studio album - "How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful"
The band's long awaited third studio album is called "How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful". It was released on May 29, 2015 on Island Records.

2018 - fourth studio album - "High As Hope"
The band's fourth studio album is called "High As Hope". It was released on June 29, 2018 on Republic Records.

For anyone who battles debilitating symptoms of complex trauma, this song hits you so viscerally. Trauma traps you inside of your head and you spend every waking second stuck there, almost as if there’s an invisible barrier between you and everyone/everything else. The bass line…the heartbeat in the drums…the repetition…this song feels like anxiety personified, nervous stims and panic attacks and bouncy legs and all. As someone with generalised anxiety and PTSD, this song hits. “Sometimes I wonder if I should be medicated, if I would feel better just slightly sedated” and “You’re too sensitive, they said. My best friend died two weeks ago, after years battling depression and anxiety. Lately we were talking about how excited we were about Florence's new music, and this song came up on my Spotify the day his school called me to tell me had died. It's such a powerful gift to be able to listen to this song over and over through my grief knowing how much he would have loved it. I've had anxiety all my life so I know the feeling of being chewed up and just wanting relief. Being reminded of this feeling helps me to forgive him for choosing freedom. This song reminds me every time about the struggles, the pain, the intrusive thoughts, the sense of isolation and numbness that anxiety brings. There is always a light at the end of the tunnel, where we can dance free from all of that: anxiety is not our enemy, it is just a friend too much sensitive who really cares about us, preventing bad outcomes. I don’t think Florence could ever know how many times she’s come through and swept me out of a state of fear, simply by releasing a song right when I needed it and letting me know that being a sensitive person is a strength and not a weakness. The song puts a lump in my throat every time I play it. The song is just too good to even be on radio. I'm older (54) and have kind of lost my faith in "today's" artists/music. Most of what I listen to every day is 20+ year old songs. And it's because the music is outstanding...it contains real instruments, chords, melodies and the lyrics had something to say. Real singer/songwriters that relealed their hearts, souls and life's experiences. Stuff that made you feel....something you could relate to and that would soothe your soul. So long story short...Florence + The Machine does that for me now with this album....and just within the past few months I have purchased 3 of their previous albums. So...as you can imagine....I am now hearing Florence + The Machine songs in my sleep. But really, I am so very, very grateful to have them around in the present, and that I have finally truly discovered her/them. I suddenly feel anew and excited about something of the current/present. It had been so many years. Florence is a sort of goddess to me (like Stevie Nicks was to me back in the 1980's) Ladies like this are writing from their hearts and their souls. You can absolutely feel they have lived through everything they write and sing about. And I think that's what makes one "fall in love" with an artist and have a deep appreciation for their talents and their gifts to us. And these are songs that become timeless....and the music you will continue to listen to regularly for the rest of your life. They should play "FREE" in schools for God's sake. Show kids today what quality music and songwriting means. It May show their young minds that they're not alone. Somehow, I don't think today's "top 40" music really speaks to anybody. It's all about being rich, looking hot, and picking somebody up at the club. As if life is just a big party. It's NOT. Anyway...enough of my RANT. I'm just highly in love with, impressed by and so very grateful for "FREE" and all the other terrific songs written by Florence + The Machine. I think "Free" is now in my top 10 or 20 favorite songs of all time. And it's current....not 20, 30 years old! I am excited and amazed.

My beloved sister is buried at exactly that spot on the cemetery in the final shot. My father died two days ago, and his body is gonna be there too. So hard to wrap my mind around all of it. That wasn't the war took their lives, but the war didn't give me any chance to see my father in his last days.

I don't know how many times I've watched this video - it's such a metaphor for mental health issues! It's cathartic to see the struggle in a music video, to hear the words in a song. It speaks to many, many people, myself included. The 'being exhausted and crawling back' at the end of video is powerful, as is Nighy always being there and only allowing her brief moments to be free of him as he's distracted on the phone. My mother died shortly after “My Love” was released. “King” was the last song I texted her. “My Love” has helped a lot during these past few weeks since she died. I played it every day leading up to her service, the lyrics described my loss, love and overwhelm so well. Weeks later, watching this video brought me to tears. Imagining Anxiety also as a manifestation of Grief is incredibly profound. Florence has yet again spoken to my soul in ways unmatched by other artists. I first heard this song at season one final episode of "Shrinking". I cried hearing it. I am dealing with some sort of existential questioning, feeling meaningless time to time, but I keep going. I think about my loved ones, other humans and animals that I can help out. The feeling hits me, picks me up and puts me down and I had thoughts about being lightly sedated and medicated. Like so many other people, this song spoke to me. It gives me hope. There is so much joy and there will be times for dancing, but right now I embrace all the suffering and pain. They are there for a reason. This song makes me feel connected to other people who might be dealing with depression, anxiety, trauma, PTSD, chronic stress, loss of a loved one, but still finding some sort of joy in that song. I cried too, but not from the music, it brought me a lot of uplift. It was the video, seeing at the end that it was filmed in Ukraine, realizing that thanks to the Russian war these places may not exist anymore, and all the comfort my anxiety may bring me at the thought of death is overwhelmed knowing that graveyard is going to be overflowing with bodies, if it isn't already.

She's truly exceeded herself with this album, I keep coming back to it weeks after weeks. This video warms my heart because it was filmed in my beloved Ukraine. Haven't listened to new florence music in years but came here after a friend passed away. He was a huge fan of this woman, would sing her songs out loud with devotion, his eyes closed, putting all his heart in it. Never got to hear him singing this one but i can hear him, you know? I'm trying to find him in this kind of things now, trace the steps he gave. I'm sure he saw this video at some point, probably even left a comment though i can't find it. This way i can feel him near me for a little longer and dance through the pain and sweetness his memory brings

I don't know if anyone else noticed it but there is such a metaphor in her dress. her coat is similar to the coat that the anxiety man wears, and her dress is brightly red. basically the coat is the anxiety metaphor and the dress is her personality. she doesn't take off the coat, but she does learn how to deal with it. she keeps dancing despite everything (look at the lines "it's how it is, it's how it's always be")

If you can write and sing a song that can drive a 60-year-old American white guy to his knees in tears (Borderline+PTSD) then you have done something to transcend mere music. This song is a living entity; auditory healing, maybe more, I don't know. All I know is I wish I could thank her in person for this song and for so many of her other songs that speak to me in way I never knew was possible. "Shake it Out" is another such song. Only someone who has been through the fire would understand.
